: : : What happened at Crean Lutheran was that the administration remembered they were first a Lutheran-based college prep high school and not a school whose varsity teams are extensions of club teams and whose coaches aren’t running sponsored programs with rosters full of recruited transfer students - the same thing happen in the ‘60’s at Mater Dei when Jerry Tardie was replaced. Mater Dei went back to an almost all Catholic grammar school graduate team but they started losing and the alumni reached out to a local club coach - Gary McKnight
: : McKnight was on the Ocean View staff with Jim Harris and he also coached baseball before coming to MD. The original club connection and person most responsible for McKnight’s earliest players was Pat Barrett.
: :Nope, no nepotism happening at Crean - just research who the new head coach's mom is and her job position within the Lutheran school system.
What happened at Crean will happen again to the new coach. His only coaching experience was at Orange Lutheran where they clearly are not interested in the Lutheran school mission. To say he is going to build a successful program from Lutheran school kids only will not happen. Schools need money to run and to grow and athletic success drives revenue streams here in Orange County. Call it what you want, but this is a case of nepotism, pure and simple. Those responsible for the hire will be under fire if the “more Christian”coach doesn’t win.
