: : : : : The current system is broken. There are too many automatic qualifiers , some of which are from really bad leagues.
: : : : : First, eliminate preseason division assignments. Second, only league champions are automatic qualifiers. There are about 100 leagues in the southern section. Rank them from 1-100, evenly distributed them over the 9 divisions. Then rank the remaining teams and distribute them to fill them remaining slots in each division. The top 32 teams minus the Open teams would be in Div 1, then move down and do the same to the remaining divisions. This will make sure no teams with solid winning records miss the playoffs and it doesn’t reward a team that went O-16 in the preseason then finished second in their extremely poor league.

: : : : Give me some examples of really bad leagues. Because no matter how bad a league is I can guarantee you that there are at least one good team from each league.

: : : National League. Second place team finished 6-5 overall and forfeited senior night.
: : Orange League 1st place Century was a solid team but 2nd place Savanna 8-18 Katella 9-16 Anaheim 10-18 valley 5-23 Magnolia 0-24

: The element of real competition will be greatly diluted if CIF focus on overall record rather then regular season leagues. The leagues should mean everything to the school , the league, coaches, each school , etc. teams doesn’t get rewarded for playing non league games and/or tournaments. What a school does year to year makes more intriguing to compete the following year. Now I would say CIF shall do a better job of making sure focus more on balance of schools. I agree a team coming in last place 0-10 league , 3-22 overall should not be in the playoffs. The two previous seasons shouldn’t matter , the rankings shall be based on current season and current season only. A team can have two horrible seasons n still make it to the playoffs because that school won their league two seasons prior.

Let all of the at large play wild card games, I don't think the issue is who they play but just getting in. They deserve a chance if they qualify other than that the format isn't that bad, most of the games are close the only thing in the low divisions is if a new coach brings in a bunch of players like Ribet did last year and Renaissance this year.
