: : : The current system is broken. There are too many automatic qualifiers , some of which are from really bad leagues.
: : : First, eliminate preseason division assignments. Second, only league champions are automatic qualifiers. There are about 100 leagues in the southern section. Rank them from 1-100, evenly distributed them over the 9 divisions. Then rank the remaining teams and distribute them to fill them remaining slots in each division. The top 32 teams minus the Open teams would be in Div 1, then move down and do the same to the remaining divisions. This will make sure no teams with solid winning records miss the playoffs and it doesn’t reward a team that went O-16 in the preseason then finished second in their extremely poor league.
: : Next year Football is doing something similar. They will not know what division they are in until after season. It is not a bad idea of what you have.
: Football is going to divisions that are made after the current season finishes but they have 10 games that need to be reported. Unfortunately for basketball schools are so bad at reporting scores that CIFSS is really really hesitant to go forward with it for basketball. Go look up some of the records from teams in the playoffs and you'll see lots of teams missing scores on the CIF Home website. What do you do when 20% of the section is missing at least one reported score at the end of the year. Pretty difficult to make divisions with incomplete data.
Then they don't get in, I think it's a simple proposition.
