: : : : : Servite goes 17-11 and is ranked 4th in their division and doesn’t get in OLu loses their last 11 and gets in their division ... ouch!
: : : : The divisions in general are competitive which is what cif wants. Despite the few lower division private schools that hire a travel ball guy who brings in some players or when the foreign kids are really good that year.( renaissance academy). Cif can’t really do anything about that but not allowing teams in that qualify that are ranked is bad. Perhaps add another division or let all of the at large play wild card games because they deserve to be in.
: : : The bad part to is they weren’t “good enough” to get in the playoffs but their wins will move them up a division probably. If you don’t make the playoffs you should only be able to move down divisions or stay on the same.
: : Servite is with a group of teams that was snubbed and deserves a playoff spot. Easy way to reward teams that play a quality schedule and finishes with a winning record to to eliminate the division placements prior to the season. Rank teams after the final game and we also need to eliminate all of the automatic qualifiers. Only league champions get automatic spots
: ^That would encourage leagues to shrink to 4, and to not bother play a 2nd round of league. What would the games mean if one team is undefeated halfway through?
: In a five team league, that just means 8 more guaranteed losses for teams in the league. It would be in that league's playoff interests to cancel the second half of league, and schedule basket-weaving charter and nowhere college prep, (as Pollon joked).
: Why schedule a second half of league play, and have a combined 8-8 record as a league (with the first place team who's already locked up the lone automatic spot likely having 3 or 4 of those wins), when teams placing 2-5 could schedule cupcakes, bettering their chances of a .500 record?
: A reasonable solution? Any team that qualifies as an at-large should get in. If there's not room in the bracket, make a bigger bracket. "But but but everyone gets a trophy!" Nah, same number of trophies as now, but with more teams vying for them, they mean more.
The current system is not all bad...but they need to have the flexibility to go above 32 teams in a particular bracket if there are some at-large teams that are in the top-10 for the polls.
Unfortunately the polls are not always correct or accurate because there are so many teams ranging from many leagues and all over the place so you can not possibly have an accurate comparison.
Your reasonable solution on paper sounds nice, but then you get teams that load up on easy wins in the preseason just to get to .500 benchmark.
Current system makes it very difficult for good teams in the bottom half of good leagues to make the playoffs.....Gold Coast, Trinity, Mission, Olympic and Harbor league to name a few...if you are placed in a division where there are no At-Large openings.
