: : : : : : Tustin head coach Richard Bossenmeyer, Laguna Beach's Bret Fleming and godinez head coach Greg Coombs.
: : : : : : : : : While at a middle school tournament a parent asked me who are the best high school coaches in SoCal. I said...

: : : : : : : : : Russell White, Crespi
: : : : : : : : : Doug Mitchell, Bishop Montgomery
: : : : : : : : : Dave Kleckner, Etiwanda

: : : : : : : : : Andre Chevalier, Sierra Canyon. It's time that Coach Chevalier receives the credit and respect that other great SoCal coach get. Imagine if he was full coach... 100% the full coach at Sierra Canyon when they had Cody Riley, Remy Martin, Marvin Bagley... He's managed egos well and now has a state championship ring.
: : : : : : : : : Coach Chevalier might be building a dynasty. Btw, they're a lot more fun to watch than Mater Dei.

: : : : : : : : : Which coaches did I miss?

: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : LeDuc at Damien is a pretty good coach. Only problem I have with him is the number of Ws hes added to his resume by scheduling cupcake games in the early parts of his schedule year after year. I think Kitani at Rolling Hills Prep is a pretty good coach too. And I know you will hate this but YES, Gary McKnight is a darn good coach.

: : : : : : : Add to your list
: : : : : : : Ed Azzam of Westchester, Rusty Vancleve, formerly of Foothill,
: : : : : : : and yes McKnight actually is a very good coach.

: : : : : : think the jury is still out on Steve Baik despite the 35-0 season at Chino Hills. Has potential to be.

: : : : Russell White might be the best coach in the valley. Jury is still out on Chevalier. Good recruiter and he can massage all those egos, but let's see if he can sustain it.
: : : : John Palarz at Calabasas is a good coach, gets the most out of his teams and always plays a tough pre-league schedule. Colin Jamerson (currently assistant coach at Taft, former HC at Sierra and Calabasas) is an excellent coach and should be a HC somewhere. Aaron Shaw at Oak Park is a good coach and has a great assistant coach in AJ Moye. AJ was fired from Oaks Christian and most of the real basketball players left the school. If Oaks had kept AJ - they fired him for BS political reasons - they'd be a basketball powerhouse right now.

: : :
: : : John Olive of Torrey Pines (San Diego) is an ELITE HC. Former NBA Player, 'Nova asst., LMU HC. Coaches w/ Team USA. Wins EVERY year with no matter who his roster is. Great Xs & Os and gets the most out of his players.

: : Castor, you're right. I don't think that McKnight is a good coach. Lol. He has a great system. There's a difference.
: : Being a good-great coach is more than wins and loses. How many of his players do well in college? His systems hides their flaws in a great way but do his players actually get better?
: : John Olive (TP) is solid.
: : John Palarz is another system guy. He's good at implementing a system and being in the right system. That's why I said from the beginning that Chaminade was not a good fit. He would have had more success at a Notre Dame.
: : Oaks Chr should never have fired AJ Moye. But Oaks Chr's basketball is not about fairness to the kids. (Btw, did you know that Village Chr's head of school was a long time employee of Oaks Chr but left when they told him that he would never be head of school there. So that's where he learned how to run a hoops program. "I learned it from watching you!")
: : Russell White, Crespi is one of the best. Super good.
: : Am I alone on the Andre Chevalier boat? He had success at Cleveland. He won state his first year formerly as the head coach. He's managing a lot of egos at Sierra Canyon.

: It is quite strange that MD has great teams, yet they produce very few successful college and pro players. Wheres Cage at? Pluger is doing ok at Notre Dame. But in the same sense, did McKnight create this good system to get his teams to win games? And if so, doesnt that mean hes a good coach cause its his system?

: I think its too early to make the call on Chevalier. He did a great job this season but lets see how he does in the n cat few seasons.

This brings up the question - What is the role of the high school basketball coach?

I would argue a high school basketball coach is responsible to win games, win league and/or CIF championships, get to playoffs, run a clean program, be a good role model, and graduate kids. To do this it would seem in most cases you have to develop high school talent.

Development to succeed in college is a bonus, especially when you consider 97% of kids don't play past high school.

So, for example, I would say McKnight is a good coach. Checks all the boxes. You can argue the "clean program" part, but they have never been in trouble.
