: : Servite’s basketball program has Beene somewhat of an anomaly even going back to the days of their most successful coach, Larry Walker.
: : Servite has always been and will continue to be a football school - the administration verbally acknowledges this and continues to demonstrate this by under supporting the program from their undersized gym to their distant of working with any of the local AAU type programs.
: : Servite will never be a landing spot for transfers - what athlete who wants high basketball visibility come to an all male, highly academic, highly disciplined school with basketball as an afterthought.
: : With all this said, kudos to Morris for hanging in this long and trying to be competitive.
: What I witnessed at Servite tonight was a joke. Servite players taking cheap shots against the Mater Dei players. The Asylum chanting disrespectful things. Then some kid for Servite scores a layup and is fouled with about 15 seconds left. At least 15 members of the ASS-ylum rushed the court to hug the kid. No T from the refs and nothing done by the Servite Admin. Nice Formation example. The worst part was Mater Dei not coming to play, which kept the friars in the game.
I have a different take. If the game had been in doubt, I am sure the refs would have called a techincal but this was a case of the smallest kid on either team and a guy who was going to turn in his uniform for the final time after this game was over as he was a 5-8 140 lb fan favorite getting his final 5 minutes on the court and I am sure that was the hilite of his whole career as it was pretty sensational as he drained a three pointer which had the asylum in delerium but then he stole the inbound pass and then made a sensational bank shot while being fouled and that was just too much He did miss the free throw but I have a feeling that probably was the game of a lifetime for him so I would not have wanted the refs to spoil his 5 minutes of fame. Guaranteed lifetime thrill for Estaban Colunga and Kudos to the refs for not interfering with this ending which I can only imagine that it really was his career as a bench warmer coming to a glorious unforgettable moment for the young man.\
as for your other comment , you were spot on as the Monarchs should have came out and if there ever was a time when you want to really pour it on good it should have been this game as they are sitting on a bubble with 2 or 3 other teams, Sierra Canyon, Rancho Christian, and Crespi for the 3rd and 4th seeds in the open Division and you want to impress the selection comittee to get one of the top 4 seeds to get a guaranteed home game for the playoff opener and that is all you get as the winners will be in the semi finals which will be at Cal Baptist in Riverside and it is my opinion that tonight's game definitely puts them on the bubble but working for them should be the schedule as if you look at todays National rankings, Mater Dei has lost to the top 3 teams, Montverde, Fl. Oak Hill, Va and University from Ft Lauderdale Fl and then #11 Gonzaga of Wash DC and #22 wesleyan of North Carolina so the only loss to California team was to St. John Bosco and they evened that series a couple weeks ago so even with tonight's lackluster performance ,I will not be surprised if they get the 3rd or 4th seed and again I will not be surprised it they do not get it.
