: : : Can a League Champion have a first round away game?

: : yes its a coin toss instead of the lower seed getting auto home games.

: Depends which Section of CIF you're talking about.

: In the CIF-SS, league finish is only one of several criteria that is used in doing the initial seeding. The other criteria that the seeding committee uses are:

: a) Head-to-head competition of teams under consideration
: b) Overall strength of the league in which the team participates
: c) Overall won/loss record
: d) League finish
: e) Strength against common opponents
: f) Strength of schedule
: g) Strength at end of season (whether team has won or lost its last 3 games, etc)
: h) Freelance teams will be part of the pool for the filling of "At Large" berths
: i) Computer rankings (Cal-Hi, CalPreps, and/or MaxPreps

: Coin flips are only used in the CIF-SS in the second round and later, and then only if the two teams slated to meet have both been the "away" team in the prior round, or if one team has been "home" more than the opponent.

: In the City Section, the seeding process is different, and it's done by a committee that uses a different set of criteria. In City Section it is possible for a League Champion to have a first round away game because, according to the "Gold Book' (LA City's version of the CIF Bylaws) League Champions are not guaranteed a home game.

: Instead, the higher seeded team (not necessarily a league champ) gets priority for a home game regardless if they play a league champion. Simply put, the school with the higher seed (1 being the highest) will be designated as the home school in ALL ROUNDS (no coin flips or alternating home-away as in the CIF-SS).

: In other words, in the CIF-SS, being a league champion is only one of the many criteria used to determine home and away; in City Section, being a league champion may also be considered by the seeding committee, but technically it does not translate to automatic home or away, and only the seeding number determines which team in LA City gets to be home-- it's always the higher seeded team in all rounds.

In the Southern Section, all league champs will play at home in their first round game, with possible exceptions in the Open division. At least that's how it's always been, but I haven't looked at the new divisions closely. If any division has 17 first place teams or more, one league champ would be on the road in the first round.
