: : Why do schools like St Francis play out of league games during conference play? Do they need a certain number of wins to be eligible for the playoffs or is there another reason?
: Sometimes it's good to pick up a non-league game in the league schedule to 1) see somebody different and 2) get a W to get/keep momentum.
: Also, depending on the league, if there is an odd number in the league, if you have a BYE, sometimes it's better to get that game in so you're staying in rhythm. And, if a coach thinks he needs to get a W to help get to the playoffs, who cares?
Southern Section teams have a specific number of games they can play. The number is 20 but when teams play three tournaments the total number of games counted against them is 2 for each tourney. St. Francis 3 tourneys= 6 games, league= 12 games. They now have 2 more games to play to equal 20 charged games. With most tourneys being 4 games the majority of teams play 26 games. A team can play that extra game any time they want from start of season until the end. If I was in the Mission with that schedule I would schedule a game I think I could win in late January just like that coach did.
