: : What happened to the Orange Holiday Classic? We used to look forward to seeing a lot of great games after Christmas. There used to be schedules posted and a lot of great local and out of area teams. I haven't heard anything about it the last couple of years.
: :Best Christmas Tournament for years !
First problem is Chapman joined a conference instead of remaining a D3 independent. Now they play during the break, so the Hutton Ctr is not available. The tourney moved to Hope International- still a good venue, but so many people knew that from Dec. 26-30 they could show up at Chapman any time from 9am til 9pm and see a great game, not anymore with the new venue.
Second issue is that the local papers don't cover high schools much anymore. The OC Register HS coverage is almost non-existent, the LA Times is the same. Steve Fryer and Eric Sondheimer do a good job, but the papers don't devote any space to previewing events any more. Used to be you'd open the paper on Christmas or before and there'd be a column about the cool post-Christmas tournaments.
Third issue is the .500 rule. Unless your team is cut-and-dried a top 2 or 3 team in league, most guys aren't willing to schedule up and test themselves. So some tournaments are cutting fields down to disinvite teams that were "too good". Like it or disagree with it or whatever, it's a reality. Post Christmas tourneys in OC used to be ridiculous- Orange Holiday Classic, Estancia Coast Classic, Century Classic- ALL had great match-ups every year.
Fourth- teams want to travel. When you have good 8th graders making a decision on where they're going to play, being able to tell them "hey, we go to Palm Springs.. or Arizona.. or Tahoe.. or Hawaii.. or Vegas.. or San Francisco.. or San Diego.." is a big thing.
Everything goes into it.. that's why you have the demise in the quality of some of these events..
