: : Since only playoff divisions are out and not the "season preview" on the CIF website I have a question. Will the .500 rule still be in effect this year? I read the football .500 rule and there is very gray language about the rule. Not sure if basketball will be more black and white.
: In football, the rule is pretty clear- the brackets will be filled first with qualified teams with .500 or better records. If, after exhausting the pool of fully qualified teams, sub-.500 teams will be eligible to fill any remaining spots rather than leaving open spots in the bracket and creating byes.
: "In the sport of football, in order to alleviate byes, if there are no .500 teams entered or all .500 or better teams have been taken, then the next best record as submitted by leagues will be taken. However, no team under .500 will be placed until all .500 at-large entries have been placed."
: While it is not clear what will happen in basketball, the manual does indicate that the council has dictated that byes are to be avoided, going forward, in ALL sports.
: "By action of the CIF-SS Council, byes should be filled in all brackets, for all sports, by either at-
: large or free lance applicants."
: This indicates to me that basketball will likely end up treating sub- .500 teams similarly
>> Only football has this setup due to teams can only play one game per week. Byes are still in play for all other sports.
