: : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : I believe it is safe to say that today's player handles the ball better than players of years or decades past. Just my opinion.

: : : : : : : : : : We also know kids are bigger and more athletic than ever before.

: : : : : : : : : : That being said, what skill is not taught or is lacking in the players we see today?

: : : : : : : : : : Appreciate all input and comments.

: : : : : : : : : What is not being taught is the mental side of basketball.

: : : : : : : : True. Alot of these kids spend countless hours dribbling through cones with trainers but their actual basketball IQ is very low.

: : : : : : : : Also some skills such as shooting a mid range shot are completely ignored these days. I understand not shooting long 2s but these kids can't even make an open 12-15 foot shot in a game.

: : : : : : : : Defensive fundamentals are also often ignored. I have been watching some high school summer games and very few kids bother much with playing defense. Kids can handle the ball and shoot 3s but put little effort on the other end.

: : : : : : : : Many are also mentally weak. They get behind a little bit in a game and start hoisting 3s without running any plays.

: : : : : : : I'd say the mental aspect is a problem. A lot of players don't like to be told they have weaknesses. They only want to hear positives. They don't really put in the work outside of their team's practices or their individual workouts.

: : : : : : : Take a look at the NBA summer league. Think back to the 80s when it was at Loyola Marymount, or the 90s at UCI or the Long Beach Pyramid. The league went 3 weeks. It was a show each night to see which "REAL" NBA players were going to show up. There were free agent teams made up of NBA vets who just wanted to BALL. Now look- oh, it's not worth it, I'm sitting out- and those are ROOKIES!! At some point, don't you have to just LOVE playing ball? OK, some will say that "it's not worth getting hurt.." OK. They can get hurt in practice. Freak accidents occur- Lamar Odom destroyed his ankle in practice once because he stepped on a ball. It happens. It's like these guys expect to exist in a bubble and show up on opening night and just be able to hoop. It doesn't work like that.
: : : : : : Constructive criticism. Players say they wanna be coached but many are marshmellow soft.

: : : : : There is no value in the mid range shot. Years of analytics have proven this. Key or 3!

: : : : : Decision making is not taught at all. When and why should I counter? Why and when should I utilize a finishing or dribble move? Reading second level defenders. Thinking the game.

: : : : Mid range shots are still important and dare say those shots are making a comeback even though the nerdy analytic guys like Daryl Morey don't want to hear it. Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and even Curry are some of the best in the game.

: : : Irving shoots 48% from 2 and 40% from 3. Curry shoots 43% and 40%. Simple math, shoot more 3's.

: : : Not really nerdy, just more value in the 3.

: : Defensively kids in AAU ball almost always overplay everything and play the passing lanes. Until they play someone with their skill and athleticism equal. Then they show show their lack of basic defensive concepts.

HMM... I could rant here. Haha. Here goes. The complete bball player isn't being replicated like guys in past. Often the greats can do a couple great things but not have that total great an all around game like jordan &/or Kobe did. LBJ is special post MJ era cuz he does 4 most part. What's missing? just that! & well defense by great players. Most just wanna play off in AAU. throw some assist's in there too. Players now I think are more athletic. Vertical leaps keep growing. Players arent as big now days but more lean quick, verticals & can offensively at least play the 1-4, the 1-5,.. etc etc.. Not as many broad shoulders but more lean athletic jump out of gym types & ball handling is better but I wouldn't say significantly since my days late 90's early 00's (Kyrie comes to mind). Fundamentals all way round lacking. Sure my coaches said that about my generation, but I see it w stars today. James hardin...not a complete player...look as his Defense... Carmelo (my era guy) = same. The mid range is lacking for sure in todays young baller!. shooting off dribble unless your name steph curry (this y he's so good in this new era cuz hes 1 of best all time w pulling up off dribble & creating mid range game & shots for himself.. a lost art) george hill also i like his mid range pull up. What else.. Traditional post guys! definitely rare now days lol. those all around dudes n rodman draymond green types who play their roles (Even if dirty) & could care less how many pts & dunks & 3s they had. Wing & post moves..traditional wings & post players...moving w out the b-ball in your hands... IQ which yall touched on. Personally I don't have a prob w players sitting out NBA summer L games I mean c'mon (directed at that other poster) kids now days r playing waayyyy more games & traveling more to refine their skill then you & I were thanks to AAU b-ball...thus y i don't have a prob if your a star rookie sitting. ie: Organizations baby-ing & sitting them out. There is such a thing as burning out..collecting to many injury's by HS etc... believe me. Kids now days r playing more often & more games thx to aau (yr round..did u?) then ever before! players r getting exposer & recruited younger then every before! Just my .002 cents.
