: : : : A possible reason for the .500 record or better requirement is that division placement is now based on a success factor. Member schools have questioned teams with sub .500 record gaining entry to the playoffs. Additionally, the selection committee now doesn't have to decide which non automatic qualifiers to eliminate when over 32 teams are eligible for a division. I imagine it is not easy to say Team A with a 6-20 record is better than Team B with a 7-19 record or vice versa. The profit factor is not that great when you consider the cost of running a game in the playoffs with low interest/attendance.
: : They are going the wrong way. Let everyone in that wants to get in. If teams feel that they don't deserve to get into the playoffs then they can back out.

: : : Actually the cost of running a game isn't very significant and most playoff games generate some excitement around their respective schools. The Cif profit will certainly take a hit as the majority of playoff gate goes back to them.
: : : On a more important note, it's disheartening to see all of those byes, 6 in many brackets, when kids could be playing. And I'm talking not just about the teams left out, but the teams that get the bye! I'm sure they'd rather play with the chance to get a first round win on the court. Also, discouraging for a lower seed who wins a a first round road game only to know there is no coin flip, they now go on the road again to an even higher seed who had a few days off? Let's correct this and fill those brackets next year!!! That's what Cif is supposed to be about.
: CIF did this so that all sports follow the same guidelines. No other sports allow an At-Large entry into the playoffs without a .500 record. They want as much continuity as possible, since they started this new playoff system. I am not a fan of the rule, and definitely not a fan of it not being publicized sooner, but now everybody can start padding their schedules :). I actually believe that they should do away with automatic entries, or at least for those not winning their league. If CIF is truly interested in making the playoffs solely based on competitive equity, as they say they are, then the automatic qualifiers should be taken away. Some leagues are much stronger than others, and this undoubtedly punishes those teams in the stronger leagues.
