: : Each year people moan about how the playoffs are scheduled. Why can't we think like other states?

: : Maybe set a date (Jan 30 or so) by which any team wishing to participate in the playoffs submits paperwork, etc. to play regardless of record/league standing (I know this de-emphasizes league results but it also removes the stigma attached to having a good team whose league is stacked or a coach who has the guts to play a strong schedule).

: : Or how about separate divisions based on "public" pr "private" with the winners playing?

: I have long advocated private and public playoff divisions like many states do and then merge them for playoffs on the state level. The main difference between public and private schools is the ease of transfer due to residency. The other suggestion is to place both public and private schools that have multiple transfers and recruits in the same division which CIF somewhat does now in the IAA division but not entirely. They have tried the Open Division to address the issue as well. It is much better now than it was but not entirely solved

I believe we should go to a system that only league champions are automatic qualifiers. All others teams are then selected based on winning percentage and strength of schedule.
