: A possible reason for the .500 record or better requirement is that division placement is now based on a success factor. Member schools have questioned teams with sub .500 record gaining entry to the playoffs. Additionally, the selection committee now doesn't have to decide which non automatic qualifiers to eliminate when over 32 teams are eligible for a division. I imagine it is not easy to say Team A with a 6-20 record is better than Team B with a 7-19 record or vice versa. The profit factor is not that great when you consider the cost of running a game in the playoffs with low interest/attendance.

Actually the cost of running a game isn't very significant and most playoff games generate some excitement around their respective schools. The Cif profit will certainly take a hit as the majority of playoff gate goes back to them.
On a more important note, it's disheartening to see all of those byes, 6 in many brackets, when kids could be playing. And I'm talking not just about the teams left out, but the teams that get the bye! I'm sure they'd rather play with the chance to get a first round win on the court. Also, discouraging for a lower seed who wins a a first round road game only to know there is no coin flip, they now go on the road again to an even higher seed who had a few days off? Let's correct this and fill those brackets next year!!! That's what Cif is supposed to be about.
