: : : So I read that CIF has a 20 game season stipulation for boys basketball.
: : : I am under the impression that for teams that are in a 6 school league that this typically is partitioned this way.
: : : 10 league games (2 rounds against 5 teams due to home and away games)
: : : 4 non-league games (chosen by the coach - not sure by what criteria - proximity, level of competition, prior arrangements).
: : : 6 games at tournaments (where each tournament counts for 2 games, with the understanding that most tournaments you actually play 4).
: : : True total is then 26 games per season PRIOR to playoffs.
: : : My question is how are some teams playing 28-29 games?
: : : How does a 5th tournament game (played as a friendly count)?
: : : How does playing international team count?
: : : How does playing out of state games/invitationals count?
: : : Can a coach conceivably schedule 30-35 games before playoffs?
: : The regulation of tournaments has become a little questionable. However a team can play 5 games in tournaments. Many Orange County and Santa Barbara county tournaments have started to implement this. Used to be only larger tournaments could have a fifth game. Now it does not matter what size the tournament, teams can play a fifth game. I say questionable because I think the "tournaments" are just a bunch of friendlies that the director/participating teams call a tournament. Sometimes they are even played over several weeks.
: A four or five game tournament counts as only 2 games played in that 20-game total.
As 29 games before playoffs. The count is as follows:
A. 3 five team tournaments = counts only as 6 games against 20 game total, but actually equates to 15 games played
B. 14 more games (league or non-league is irrelvant) with each counting as one game
= 29 games actually played before playing any playoff games.
Including playoffs, (assume CIF-SS with a 32-team bracket), that yields another 5 games for a team that wins a section title, for a total of 34 games in a season.
And that same Section Finalist then goes to the State CIF Regional Tournament, which has 4 games possible for the team that wins the Regional, that's 38 games total. Add to that the State Finals (to which a team who wins a Regional title advances) and you get to 39 games that could possibly be played in a single season.
