Wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.
Coach Alford is an offensive genius because that where his heart, ideas and energy is ; however, he must use that same genius on the defensive side scouting, charting, brainstorming and - making adjustments on the defensive side of the ball. While UCLA offense is aggressive and has counter attacks defending on the opposing teams defense. Opposing teams can prepare for UCLA's defense in 24 hours because it lacks aggression and to infrequently traps to keep the opposing offense off balance.
UCLA are lost defensively on how to stop full court and 1/2 court dribble penetration - basically help defenders are simply flashing defensively or reaching aimlessly to stop the ball. 1st and foremost, they must learn to move into positions on the court to stop the ball - stop reaching. Secondly once they stop ball, the must be more aggressive defensively and trap and create turnovers to produce points. This applies to both zone and man defense - though developing and playing a more attacking zone defense will give them a better chance to win it all. The lack of systematic defensive aggression and traps on specific areas of the court makes UCLA defense to easy for opposing teams to prepare for offensively.
UCLA is prone to baseline or corner drives which has lead to numerous opponent's second chances baskets. The post players are to often caught to far underneath the basket or out of position and must learn to see the ball and get out far enough baseline to stop such drives and don't be satisfied with just stopping ball, aggressively trap to prevent passes out of the trap to create turnovers.
Finally, UCLA will be better served playing more zone with an emphasis on aggressively trapping strategically - mix it up - trapping sometimes in corners and others times up top - to keep the opposing team off balance and out of sync.
