Pepperdine Gets Two Guards--(November 18, 1997)

Lorenzo Romar and Pepperdine yesterday received two letters of intent. The first was from Brandon Armstrong, (6'-5" G, Vallejo, CA), and the other was from Craig Lewis (6'-3" Sr. G Benson Tech, Portland Ore.). Lewis has been rated at one of the top Point-Shooting guards in his class, has an outstanding jump shot, can hit threes all day, and is an excellent athlete who also plays good defense. He committed verbally to Pepperdine some time ago, and followed it up by signing a NLOI this week. Armstrong is really more of a true point guard, who has nice height at 6'-5" to play either the point or SG at Pepperdine.

With these two scholarships, Pepperdine is now at the limit of scholarships. For those interested, that's 13, which means that virtually every player on the bench will be on a full basketball scholarship. Next year, only two players will be graduating, seniors Bryan Hill (6'-8" C 225 lbs) and Gerald Brown (6'-3" G 210lbs), so the team should look pretty much like it does this year, which means they should be really awesome. They've got height, shooting ability, quickness, and look like a complete team.

Pepperdine will also open it's non-exhibition non-conference schedule (does that make sense?) season tonight at the Pond at 7pm when the Waves will meet Pat Douglass' UC Irvine Anteaters. The Anteaters were easily defeated last Saturday by a very strong USF squad.

Pepperdine had a pretty mediocre season last year, going 6-21, but Gerald Brown was injured and did not play, omm'A Givens and Jelani Gardner both redshirted and it was Romar's first season with a team he did not put together. This year, he's got a great team and you've got to look for them to challenge for the WCC title.

The game will also be on two radio stations in SoCal. For those in the northern sections of SoCal try KIEV (870); for those in the Irvine area, the game is on the campus station, KUCI (88.9 FM).

Yeah, we know this game conflicts with the Lakers matchup against Utah, but what the heck. Get to a restaurant near the Pond by 6, and you can see the first hour of the Laker game on Channel 9; or better yet, bring a Watchman, and you can catch both games.
