P-T Announces the Best in the West
Voting Results--(November 11, 1997)

The Long Beach Press-Telegram announced the results of it's 22nd Annual Prep Basketball Preseason voting among coaches and scouts for the "Best in the West" prep honors.

Richard Jefferson (6'-7 1/2" F, Moon Valley High, Phoenix) was rated the No. 1 prospect among all top seniors in the Western United States.

Eighty-two ballots were received from college coaches and high school basketball scouts, and according to the Press-Telegram, only seven points separated Jefferson from Doug Wrenn of Seattle O'Dea High, who finished No. 4 in the voting.

Jefferson, who is expected to sign a national letter of intent with the defending National Champion Arizona Wildcats, attracted national recognition this summer with his standout performances at several all-star camps and in tournaments at Indianapolis, Orlando, Long Beach and Las Vegas. He had a total of 460 points, and was selected the No. 1 player in the West on 24 out of the 82 ballots cast.

2. Ray Young (Alameda St. Joseph-Notre Dame)--The 6'-4" guard finished with 458 points and 18 first place votes. He will sign with UCLA along with Matt Barnes (selected as No.

3. Tayshaun Prince (Dominguez)--The 6'-8" guard/forward had 456 points and 20 first place votes. He is reportedly considering UCLA, Kansas and Kentucky.

4. Doug Wrenn (Seattle O'Dea High)--The 6'-6" Wrenn had 453 points and 13 No. 1 votes.

5. Tony Bland (L.A. Westchester). --Bland will sign with Syracuse, and had 411 points.

6. Jason Thomas (Dominguez, 6'-4" G)--he will attend USC on a football scholarship and will walk on to the basketball team;

7. David Bluthenthal (6'-8" PF Westchester)--David has reportedly told several sources that he will sign at USC tomorrow.

8. Luke Walton (6'-8" C San Diego University)-- Luke has committed to the University of Arizona Wildcats and will sign tomorrow.

9. Ricky Anderson (6'-81/2" Long Beach Poly)--He is reportedly considering several schools, including possibly UCLA, and at one time was considering Arizona, but his spot was offered to another after he delayed his decision

10. David Hamilton (6'-9" Compton)--He's reportedly considering Fresno State and Miami-Florida

11. Ruben Douglas (6'-41/2" Burbank Bell-Jeff), who will join Walton at Arizona

12. Chris Jefferies (6'-7" Fresno Washington)--he impressed a lot of folks this summer, he's been reported as considering Fresno State also

13. Matt Barnes (6'-8" C/PF Del Campo, Fair Oaks)--This Sacramento area native will sign with UCLA tomorrow.

14. Senque Carey (6'-4" Mountain View St. Francis High)-- The San Jose area native has committed verbally to the University of Washington

15. Freddie Jones ( 6'-31/2" Barlow High)-- From the Portland area suburb of Gresham.
