Van Nuys Tournament: First
Day Flashes--(January 5, 1998)

We just heard from Venice Coach Dave Goosen, and here's the news of what happened today in the first round of the Van Nuys Tournament.

Venice beat El Camino Real 69-49
Kennedy beat Reseda
University beat Hollywood
Van Nuys beat Sherman Oaks CES

Dave didn't really pay attention to the scores of the other games, just the ultimate results. Based on these results, tomorrows games will be as follows:

Consolation Semifinal Game 1: El Camino Real v. SOCES at 3:30 pm
Consolation Semifinal Game 2: Hollywood v. Reseda at 5:00 pm
Championship Semifinal Game 1: Venice v. Van Nuys 6:30 pm
Championship Semifinal Game 2: University v. Kennedy 8:00 pm

In the Venice game, not surprisingly, coach Goosen had a few of the details for us. Glen McGowan (6'-6" Jr. F/C) played just a great game, scoring 26 points, pulling down 12 rebounds, and getting 3 assists, in about 27 or 28 minutes of play. He had a couple of very impressive dunks, and just played a very well-balanced game. Kevin McQueen (6'-0" Sr. G) had 25 points, including 5 three pointers. Erik Matsubayshi (5'-7" Sr. PG) only collected 4 points, but had 12 assists and only committed 2 turnovers in the entire game. Kevin Johnson (6'-3" Jr. F) was the defensive stopper for Venice tonight, and he had 7 blocks and 9 rebounds, just controlling the inside game and moving ECR's post and forward players out of the way. Goosen told us that for three and a half quarters, Venice played nearly flawless ball, and they were up by as many as 25 points going into the fourth quarter, then had a little lapse where ECR closed it to about 15, and then Venice ultimately got back into it, stretching the lead to the eventual 20 points by which they won.

Coach Goosen was calling us after leaving the tournament on his cell phone, and he kept fading in and out, and the above was all the info we could get before he ultimately got cut off in the Sepulveda Pass. Hopefully we'll have a more complete report, including the actual scores of the other games on the first day, early tomorrow morning. And we'll be going to the tournament tomorrow night to get a first-hand look at McGowan, McQueen & Co. tomorrow. See you there.
