Las Vegas Prep Tourney: Day Four: Vegas
Beats Vegas In Surprise Win--(January 1, 1998)

Day Four: Tuesday, December 30, 1997

What a headline. And every word of it is true.

And if you want to know who won the final, we'll save you the suspense.

Durango beat Valley 72-68.

There were also a whole bunch of other games played the day of the final, including the following:

9th place, Cimarron-Memorial 69, Corona 52
7th place, Clark 77, Serra (Calif.) 55
5th place, Modesto Christian 93, Shadow Mountain (Ariz.) 81
3rd place, Western 74, Las Vegas 61

So, of the 13 teams from California, Corona finished 10th, Serra finished 8th, Modesto Christian finished 5th. Three placings out of 13. Not an ausipicous ending, but then the deck was a bit stacked from the beginning.

If you want to read about how at least one of the teams from SoCal actually played, then check out Michael Miller's impressions of Serra at West Coast Hoops. Michael attended the final day, Tuesday's games in Vegas, and we're still not sure how he did it, since he was also at the BIW for the finals. We guess it's possible to have seen the Serra game, hit the airport for the one hour flight back to LA, and drive to Long Beach from LAX in rush hour traffic to catch the BIW. And since the Westchester v. Artesia game wasn't set until 9:00 pm on Tuesday at the BIW, it was actually pretty feasible. If we hadn't been working, it's what we'd have done. But it's no wonder Michael's now ill. So, get better Michael. . . And Happy New Year, from your friends at SoCalHoops.com.
