VICTORY LEAGUE

Baptist Christian 71, Bethel Christian 55

The Baptist Christian Warrior boys basketball squad secured, at least for now, second place in the Victory League race with this win over visiting Bethel Christian on Tuesday night. Junior guard Ryan Halverson, who led the Warriors with 20 points, was injured during a fall in the second half and had to be taken to the hospital.

But despite losing Halverson, Warrior coach Joe Cortes said he was very happy with the team effort and praised his charges for hustling all the way. The Warriors set a torrid pace in the first period with Halverson, Barry Maisel, and Noel Grammer all shooting well. Baptist Christian controlled the boards and the Kings could not get on track. The Warriors were up 24-13 after one period of play. The visitors began to find the range in the second quarter with Chris Roberts leading the way. The Warriors were still hitting but the Kings matched them basket for basket and the Warriors headed for the dressing room with a 44-31 margin at the break.

Bethel came out after the half and cut the Warrior lead to 44-37 before Maisel went to work. Maisel hit two from the field and with the help of Grammer, Ben Borders and Shane Stevenson, the Warrior lead was 57-44 after three periods of play. Cortes cleared his bench in the final quarter and his backups played very well. The Kings kept battling but could never close the gap . When the final buzzer sounded the Warriors were up 71-55. Maisel added 17 and Grammer chipped in with 14. Justin Sadler grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Warriors with Maisel and Grammer each pulling down 9.

SKYLINE LEAGUE

Yucca Valley 57, West Valley 50

West Valley started cold and finished even colder. The Mustangs could not get their early shots to fall and then proceeded to fall themselves during a tough loss to Yucca Valley. The loss puts the Mustangs at 1-4 in Skyline League and puts them in a last-place tie with Banning. West Valley got 11 points each from Nick Collins, Ruben Suarez and Chris Davis. The Mustangs are now 5-16 overall.

Beaumont 70, San Jacinto 62

A disastrous night at the free-throw line helped San Jacinto blow a nine-point lead as Beaumont outscored the Tiger 32-15 in the fourth quarter to post a huge comeback win. But SJ gave it away at the free-throw line. At least that's what their coach, Michael Paul told others after the game. In fact, SJ missed 15 free throws, too many to win the game. The Tigers finished 26-of-41 from the line. Peter Murrieta led the Tigers with 22 points and Albert Aguilar added 12 points and 16 rebounds. Jeramie Duguid chipped in with 11 points. The loss severely hurts the Tigers because they now must play on the road Friday against Skyline League-leading Notre Dame Riverside. San Jacinto is 2-3 in league action.
