Southern Section News: Oxnard's
New Pacific View League--(January 31, 1998)

The Ventura County Star News reported yesterday that the "Oxnard League" finally has a name.

The paper reported that the area's newest high school athletic league was freed of its generic existence Wednesday as the Oxnard Union High School District board chose the name "Pacific View League" for the five-school group that will begin operation in the 1998-99 school year.

"Finally," Bill Studt, superintendent of schools for the OUHSD, told the VC Star.

The league had been nameless since it was created last fall during the CIF-Southern Section league realignment process. It will include two schools now in the Marmonte League (Camarillo and Channel Islands) and three from the Channel League (Hueneme, Oxnard and Rio Mesa). A yet-unbuilt sixth district school (Pacifico High) will eventually join the league. The district board selected the name by a 4-0 vote, ending a rather involved process, said Studt.

The district solicited names from administrators, faculty, coaches and parents' groups, Studt said, narrowing the suggestions to three choices: Pacific View, Gold Coast and Coastal Plains. Those three were forwarded to the board for selection. Studt said several administrative details remain before the league begins operation. Foremost among those is the drafting of league bylaws, which must then be forwarded to the CIF-SS for approval "before we become certified as an official league."

The district sought to form the league primarily to decrease travel costs and the amount of classes missed by athletes. But Studt said
heightened rivalries and increased spectator support are expected to be additional benefits.

The Pacific View League will join 72 current leagues in the CIF-Southern Section. It will be the eighth league with at least one team in Ventura County, and the only league made up exclusively of Ventura County schools.
