More Santa Barbara County Action
From Friday Night--(January 18, 1998)

There were more games played in Santa Barbara and Northern Ventura County Friday night besides the Dos Pueblos-Santa Barbara game which was won by Shantay Legans and Dos Pueblos. There were games in the Condor League, the Tri-Valley League, and other games in the Channel League, which we've reported on separately. Here are a couple of others:

Tri-Valley League:

Bishop Diego 66, Oak Park 53--This was a game which Tri-Valley League fans were waiting for all year. Bishop Diego High showed just how even things are in this league by beating Oak Park on Friday night, the four-time defending Tri Valley League champions, 66-53 at the Bishop Gym.

And much like Mater Dei, and Harvard-Westlake, which both also lost Friday night, this was only the second time Oak Park had lost a league game in the last five years. "This was the biggest game for our program,'' Bishop forward Joe Lammers said after the game. Lammers led the Cardinals, who are now 12-4 on the season, in the league opener with 25 points and 12 rebounds. "We had this day circled on all our calendars." Lammers was one of seven Bishop seniors who played Friday night and were determined to beat Oak Park before they graduated. The other seniors included center Christian Rovsek, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds; point guard Marcus Madrigal; and guards Tony Ortiz and Michael Burich, who took turns guarding Oak Park's most dangerous shooter, Greg Jones.

Jones led the Eagles with 14 points, but he missed a lot of shots early in the game as Bishop jumped out to a 17-4 lead. Bishop used a box-and-one defense against the visitors. Jones had only two points in the first half, and the Cardinals led 35-21.

"I felt if we shut Jones down, they'd have a harder time beating us with their other guys'' said Bishop coach John Ward. "I've always been a man-on-man coach, but I've got all kinds of junk we can use." Burich said he could tell Jones was getting frustrated by having a Cardinal as his personal escort wherever he went. ``After a while he wasn't even moving around,'' said the Bishop guard. ``He was standing."

But Bishop was wary at halftime. Two reserves played key roles for the Cardinals in the third quarter. Sophomore guard Jaime Sanchez penetrated the Oak Park defense for a basket and some assists. And senior center Dan Perlis scored six points inside. Bishop took a 49-34 lead into the final quarter. Jones cut it to 54-45 when he hit his second 3-pointer with six minutes remaining, but then Lammers reeled off four straight points to keep the Cardinals in a double-digit lead. Lammers scored 11 in the final period.

"Bishop Diego has to defend this court if they want to win the championship, and they did a good job tonight,'' said Oak Park coach Rob Hall. Hall said the key was the work by Lammers, Rovsek and the rest of the Cardinals on the offensive boards, providing them with extra shots. "We gave up too many points,'' said Hall. "We were only giving up 57 a game prior to this one." The Eagles lost Jeff Smith when he dislocated a shoulder in the first quarter. Oak Park dropped to 1-1 in league play and is now 9-7 overall. The Cardinals play at Carpinteria on Wednesday and visit Fillmore next Friday.

The scoring for Oak Park was led by Murphy with 12, Z. Smith 11, Greg Jones 14, including 2 three-pointers, Wedel with 9 including one three, Carver with 2, S. Jones 2, and Johnson with 3 points

For the victorious Bishop Diego team, Lammers finished with 25, Rovsek 11, Burich 6, Madrigal 6, Ortiz finished with 7 including a three, Sanchez 2, Perlis 6, and Adcock with a single 3-pointer.

In other Santa Barbara County action Friday night:

Carpinteria 67, St. Bonaventure 53:

Junior forward Ben Scott, coming off a 29-point performance in a win over Fillmore, followed with 16 to lead the Warriors past visiting St. Bonaventure in a Tri-Valley League game. Carpinteria is off to a 2-0 start in TVL play, and coach Butch Breeden credited Scott, saying "He's really stepped it up for us and taken a leadership role."

Senior forward Lincoln Nordy added 15 points and junior guard Tonny Parra added six assists. But Breeden said defense was the key, as St. Bonaventure turned the ball over 18 times. John Barbieri had five steals, and he, Parra and Scott, were jumping on the ball and causing turnovers all night. The defense was primarily responsible for the Warriors, who are now 9-5 overall, jumping out to a 38-21 halftime lead, and they coasted from that point. St. Bonaventure fell to 0-2 and 9-7 overall.

For St. Bonaventure, Emard led with 15, Chaparro 2, Houston 3, Devericks 12, Mora 12 including two three pointers, Releford 5, and Duplessie had 4 points.

For Carpinteria, the leading scorer was Nordby with 14, while Barbieri had 9, Jimenez 3, Parra 7, Scott 16, Godkin 10, Matson 5, Redfield 3. Carpinteria had a total of 8 three-pointers, with Scott having 3, Godkin 2, Nordby, Redfield, and Parra one each

Condor League:

Cate 84, Cornerstone Chr. 34:

Freshman guard Peter Nagano scored a career-high 21 points and senior guard Ogo Nwanyanwu added 17 to lead the Rams to their first win of the season in the Condor League opener at Cate. The Rams improve to 1-5 and faced Villanova Prep at 2 p.m. Saturday in another league matchup at Cate. Neal Perlmutter (12 points), T.J. Fudge (11) and John Dvorak (11) also scored in double figures for the Rams. Cate also had solid play given the limited number of players they have on the roster. But they will face a tough second game against Villanova. Cate has been rebuilding since the Carpinteria loss (62-45 on Jan. 9), and they have played well since then.

For Cornerstone, Walker had 9, Henderson 5, Tasker 6, Kilpatrick 3, Stevens 3, Hahn 2, Miller 6.

For Cate Fudge scored 11, O. Nwanyanwu 17, Dvorak 11, Pelrmutter 12, Nagano 21, Barton 2, Chan 10.
