Mission League: Harvard-Westlake
Demolishes Notre Dame--(January 24, 1998)

Harvard-Westlake may not be in first place in the Mission League anymore, having lost two league games, one to Loyola, and the other to Chaminade last Friday night at Chaminade. But the Woverines proved they are still entitled to be ranked (they are currently No. 8--down from No. 2 last week-- in the Southern Section CIF coaches' poll; they are also still ranked by both the LA Times and the Daily News--No. 7 according to the Daily News, and No. 10 in the Times' regional poll, as they defeated Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) easily 87-50.

We had intended to go to the game on Thursday night, but then at the last minute found out that because of Harvard-Westlake's final exam schedule, the game had been moved to 3:00 or 4:00 o'clock--in either case, it was too early for us to get from downtown LA to watch. So we had to rely upon our friends for the report. Here it is.

Russell Lakey proved that he is one of the best guards in the area, both at the point and at the 2 guard spot, and he scored 30 points in the game. Alex Minn also added 14 points, while John Karavas and Alex Holmes (our favorite big guy--don't tell Anthony Garrison of Crenshaw--now there would be a matchup) both had 13 points.

The win improved H-W's record to 15-4 overall, and 3-2 in league play. Notre Dame fell to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in Mission League play.

Harvard jumped out to an early lead, 15-8 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was almost even with H-W just edging Notre Dame in scoring for the quarter by 2, 20-18. But they still went to the locker room at the half with a lead of 35-26. Then, in the third and fourth quarters, Harvard-Westlake just blew away the Knights. In the third, H-W outscored Notre Dame 31-15, and in the fourth, they capped it with a 21-9 scoring run.

For H-W, in addition to Lakey's 30 points, Karavas' 13 and Min's 14, John Terzian had 2 points, Chad Garson had 2, Anthony Naylor had 2, Patt Biggerstaff had 6 points, and Todd Kurihawa had 5 points and 7 assists. In addition to scoring 13 points, Alex Holmes also had 10 rebounds.

For Notre Dame, Pearson was the leading scorer with 9, Donnelly had 8, Murray 6, Griffin 1, Ward 8, Anderson 4, Williams 6, Rutledge 6, and Johnson had 2.
