Golden West League: Only One
Game Thursday; Tustin Wins--(January 30, 1998)

There was only one game played on Thursday in the Golden West League, and it was one of only four games played in all of Orange County among boys' teams, most of which will be playing either tonight, Friday January 30, or on Saturday the 31st. Here are the highlights and the scoring from the Tustin v. Santa Ana game.

Tustin 64, Santa Ana 43

Tustin is a team which finished pretty well last year overall, with a 19-10 record. They also played respectably in league finishing 6-4. This season the team is 17-5, doing much better, and features Willie Knighton (6'-1" Jr. G) a transfer from Oceanside El Camino, Peter Johnston, (6'-5" Jr. F) and Patrick Yapjoco (5'-10" Sr. PG). Santa Ana is a team which was just terrible last year, and they finished with a record of 3-21 overall and went winless at 0-10 in league in 1996-97. This year, the team is doing a little better and they are 8-14 overall. Santa Ana features Chris Galvan (6'-0" Jr. F), and Rene Cabrera (6'-0" Jr. G), in addition to senior forward Erick Castro who is 6-4. Sophomore guard Mike Mendoza was considered a key reserve at the beginning of the season, but he has been seeing more and more time in games lately.

Tustin and Santa Ana on Thursday fought the first quarter to a complete standstill, and at the end of the quarter they were tied at 6-6. In the second quarter, Santa Ana could again only muster 6 points, but Tustin managed to double it's point output with 12, and led at the half 18-12. Yawn. Things picked up a bit in the second half as Johnson scored easily leading Tustin's scoring run of 26 points for the quarter to Santa Ana's 15. Johnson finished with 16 points on the night, and was the only Tustin player in double figures. In the fourth quarter, Tustin put it away, outscoring Santa Ana 18-16 for the win.
