Highlights From Friday--(January 24, 1998)

We're pleased to present some scores and highlights from in and around Bakersfield, which even though it's in the San Joaquin Valley, is still part of the southern half of the State, and therefore, we consider it properly the territory of SoCalHoops. We're edging towards Fresno, we know, which is clearly CenCal, but so what. Anyway, here are the scores and highlights from the games played Friday, January 23, 1998.

SOUTHWEST YOSEMITE LEAGUE

South High 73, Centennial 67

J.R. Washington scored 23 points, Kevin Kizzy had 19 and Glen Thomas made all eight of his fourth-quarter free throws Friday to lead the South High boys basketball team past Centennial 73-67 in a Southwest Yosemite League game at South. Washington's drive down the lane and basket put South (10-8, 1-1 SWYL) up for good, 64-62, late in the game. From there, South kept the ball and Thomas hit his free throws. Clint Mills led Centennial (8-9, 1-1 SWYL) with 25 points. Chris Jaime added 18. The Golden Hawks led 18-12 after the first quarter, but South outscored them 19-10 in the second quarter to take a 31-28 halftime lead. Thomas finished with 13 points for the Rebels.

Stockdale 52, North 37

At Stockdale, Bryson Gholston scored 24 points and James Johnson added 12 to lead the Mustangs (7-11, 1-0 SWYL). Charlie Clark scored 10 points to lead North (0-2 SWYL).

SOUTHEAST YOSEMITE LEAGUE

East 59, Foothill 43

At East, Marquese Jingles had 17 points and Michael Edwards added 13 to lead the Blades (7-9 1-1 SEYL). Arnold Walton led Foothill (0-2 SEYL) with 13 points.

Highland 62, Arvin 36

At Highland, Ricky Shaw scored all 12 of his points in the first half and Ruben Cano scored eight of his 10 points in the final quarter to lead the Scots (11-8, 1-0 SEYL). Desi Botello led Arvin (1-1 SEYL) with 13 points.

SSLEAGUE

Garces 102, Taft 43

Josh Perez had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Ricky Montoya had 23 points and Ryan Fox had 12 rebounds and 10 points to lead the Rams (13-6, 4-0 SSL). Josh Atkins had eight assists. Taft's Ryan Pullard scored 12 points.

Tehachapi 69, Shafter 58

Mike Seville had 21 points and Jeremiah Watts added 17 to lead the Warriors (13-3, 3-1 SSL). Jordan Lewis had 19 points, including 10-of-11 free throws, and Nathan Penner added 13 for Shafter (11-7, 1-3), which hit 20-of-23 free throws
