Other Santa Barbara Action From Friday--(February 7, 1998)

There were some other games in Santa Barbara yesterday beside the Dos Pueblos-Ventura Game. San Marcos lost to Oxnard, and Brook Billings didn't punch anyone out in this one. In Condor League action, Laguna Blanca continued to roll, beating Cate. And in Tri-Valley League action, Bishop Diego beat Carpinteria. Here are the details and highlights.

Channel League

Oxnard 49, San Marcos 46

Oxnard held visiting San Marcos scoreless over the final three minutes and Jeff Fouchey hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left to lift the Yellowjackets to the victory. San Marcos scored just six points in the fourth quarter and dropped to 9-3 in the Channel League and 18-5 overall. San Marcos had led the whole way, but Oxnard tied the game with a minute to play, then Fouchey hit the game-winner.

The Royals were led by Brook Billings, who tallied 11 points. Art Guiterrez added eight points. Oxnard improves to 8-4 and 14-7. For San Marcos, the complete scoring was Moharram 3, Gutierrez 8, Arndt 2, Billings 11, Oden 6, James 6, Nance 5. James, Moharram, and Billings each had one three point shot. For Oxnard, the scorers were Galloway 2, O'Brien 2, Fouchey 18, Hernandez 5, Fong 4, Tafoya 10, Eberhardt 8. Fouchey had 2 three pointers and Hernandez and Tafoya each had one.

Condor League

Laguna Blanca 66, Cate 49

Chad Lewis scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Owls to the Condor League win against visiting Cate. Laguna Blanca, ranked third in the CIF Division 5-A, improved to 8-0 in league and 17-4 overall. Laguna Blanca's David Cochran added 14 points and had seven steals while Chris Tamas had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Ogo Nwanyanwu led Cate with 20 points while Ravi Mehta added 12 points. The Owls are 2-0 against Cate this season. Laguna Blanca went on a 6-0 run in the final two mintues of the third period to lead 52-40 entering the fourth quarter. For Cate the scoring was Nagano 5, Perlmutter 4, Mehta 12 with one three, Nwanyanwu 20 including 3 threes, Fudge 8, and Dvorak 0. For Laguna Blanca, the scoring was Wilson 8, Lewis 17, Sacks 2, Tamas 13, Cochran 14, Niehaus 7, Keith 5. For LB , Lewis had 3 three-pointers. The Cate bench was assessed to T's in the game.

Tri-Valley League

Bishop Diego 71, Carpinteria 54

The Cardinals, who actually dropped out of first place in the TVL following Wednesday's loss at Oak Park, caught the idle Eagles by improving to 5-1 in league and 16-5 overall. Carpinteria dropped to 4-3, 11-9. Bishop jumped to a 15-2 lead to start the game and the best Carpinteria could do after that was to occasionally trim the lead to single digits. Joe Lammers had 24 points and 11 rebounds - eight of them in the first half - while Christian Rovsek added 18 points and 13 rebounds, hitting 7-of-8 shots from the field. Lammers, who hit 9-of-13 shots from the floor, said Bishop coach John Ward challenged several Cardinals, including himself, after the loss at Oak Park. A case in point came in the second quarter after Carpinteria hit three straight baskets - two of them 3-pointers - to close to 29-21. Lammers battled two Warriors all the way to the floor for a rebound and dished the ball from a prone position to Rovsek for a layup. He also grabbed the game's next two rebounds and added a midcourt steal that produced another layup. Another player who rose to the occasion was senior guard Tony Ortiz. He scored 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, and also fought his way inside for six rebounds. Bishop hit on 29-of-45 shots from the floor (64 percent) while Carpinteria was a woeful 15-of-49 (31 percent). But the Warriors live and die by the 3-pointer, attempting 20 or more bombs per game. When they connected, they made runs at the Cardinals. But they hit only 5-of-23 for the game and could never compete inside with Bishop's bigger players.

Lincoln Nordby led the Warriors with 14 points and Chris Redfield added 11. Others scoring for Carpinteria were Barbieri 15 including a three, Teral 2, Nordby 14 with one three, Parra 7, Scott 5, and Redfield 11 including three three-pointers. For Bishop Diego, the complete scoring was Ortiz with 15 including two threes, Burich 9, Lammers 24 with one three pointer, Sanchez 4, Adcock 1, Rovsek 18.
