Mojave River League: Ridgecrest Burroughs: --(February 11, 1998)

Wow, does the news travel slowly out of Ridgecrest. Here's a report from the Mojave River League from a game played on Friday. We've previously provided coverage of this area, and for those who don't remember, the Mojave River League features teams such as Apple Valley, Barstow, Burroughs/Ridgecrest, Hesperia, Sultana and Victor Valley, and this covers a geographic region which covers the eastern edges of the high desert, from the Los Angeles County and Mojave areas, all the way to northern San Bernardino. Because the area is so large, and the teams so spread out, news takes a really long time to get here. So up there, they're still on Friday's games. Here's one about David Rollingson putting the Burroughs High School boys basketball team on his back Friday night and carrying them to a 58-38 win at Apple Valley in Mojave River League play.

Rollingson scored a career-high 24 points and had seven rebounds in the game, coming out as the locals' only double-figure scorer. The victory improves the locals to 3-4 in the league standings, 10-11 overall, and keeps them squarely in the hunt for a CIF-SS postseason berth.

Burroughs led 15-14 after one period, but a stalwart defensive stand in the middle two periods was more than enough to help the Burros pull away for the victory. Burroughs ran off a 13-4 spurt in the second quarter and a 16-5 surge in the third behind a mishmash of defensive schemes by Co-Head Coach Bill Campbell.

Burroughs played a little bit of 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone in the second quarter, and threw in a trap in the corners on the 1-3-1, then opened the third in a half-court trap that put them on a 10-0 scoring run that Burroughs ahead for good. It was Rollingson and O'Neil who stopped the Sundevils inside game and intimidated the Apple Valley guards from driving down the lane. Trey Montoya had just five points, but came away from Friday's win with seven assists and seven steals. O'Neil was the top rebounder with nine. Stefano Lange was the scoring leader for the Sundevils with 14.

Burroughs played its final home game of the regular season tonight, Tuesday as Victor Valley cames to town for a 7 p.m. matchup.
