City Section Scores: From
Friday February 6--(February 7, 1998)

We didn't get all the scores from yesterday, but hey, we're only missing four out of 26 and that's still 84% of the games. Maybe the scores are even 84% correct too. There were not a lot of upsets for those games where we did get the scores, perhaps with the exception of the Chatsworth-Cleveland game, and Cleveland's loss last night makes the second game in as many weeks that Cleveland has dropped to a league opponent, and our guess is that they will probably disappear from the "ranked" teams in the Daily News and Times polls. Hmmm, maybe Bell Jeff doesn't sound so bad anymore to Kent Dennis. In other games among the inner city teams that played, Los Angeles High beat Venice, and this time we won't say LA "took McGowan to school". We will say that "McGowan's team was the unfortunate loser of this contest." We didn't get to see the game and we don't have a box score on it either, so we'll reserve comment until we hear something positive about the game from anyone. In another Valley contest, Grant won, avenging it's first "league" loss of the year to Monroe, which surprised the Lancers two weeks ago, and we understand that Adir Levy of Grant was again the hero of sorts, this time with his free-throwing shooting. North Hollywood remained in contention by beating Canoga Park, and Reseda barely got by Van Nuys, which is still winless, having won one game all year by beating SOCES which plays in Magnet Conference. And check out that Crenshaw v. Gardena score. NBA style action and scoring, 119 to 98. Wow, wish we could have been there for that one.

As usual, if anyone knows about the scores that are missing, send them in. And we'll have more details later in the day on these games:

And here are some highlights from some of the Valley area games.

EAST VALLEY

North Hollywood 74, Canoga Park 71

Keron Wilkerson blocked Vlady Sandoval's three-point shot with eight seconds to play to preserve the Huskies' victory at Canoga Park. Wilkerson scored 30 points for North Hollywood (16-8, 6-2).

Grant 59, Monroe 56

Adir Levy hit four of five free throws in the last two minutes to help the Lancers hang on at Grant. Gilbert Arenas had 23 points for Grant (16-7, 7-1).

WEST VALLEY

Chatsworth 66, Cleveland 58

Josh Rodgers scored six of his 20 points in the third quarter when the Chancellors outscored Cleveland, 18-11, and took command at Chatsworth.

Taft 65, Kennedy 62

Raja Boykins is a role player for the Taft High boys' basketball team. Friday night against Kennedy, his role was to save the Toreadors from an upset loss. With center Amir Bar-Netzer suffering through his worst game of the season with seven points and four rebounds, Boykins stepped forward to score 17 of Taft's final 26 points in a 65-62 victory over the Golden Cougars. Boykins, Taft's fourth-leading scorer, had five three-pointers and finished with 22 points to help Taft take a one-game lead over Cleveland in the West Valley League. The Toreadors can clinch their first league title since 1992 with a victory over the Cavaliers Wednesday.

NORTH VALLEY

San Fernando 85, El Camino Real 68

Devin Montgomery had 24 points and Mike Page scored 21 points in the Tigers' victory at San Fernando.

Birmingham 77, Granada Hills 67

Fahim Hassankhail had 14 points to help the host Braves win.
