Southern Section Playoffs: Tonight's
Division II-A Games--(February 28, 1998)

These are quarterfinal matchups, and as the name implies, there will be four games in the Division, one in each Region. All will get started at 7:30 pm, in about an hour and a half from when we're posting this, so if you're going to get to one, go start the car and get moving, otherwise you'll have trouble finding a seat.

Division II-A Quarterfinals

Region I--Dominguez 80, Sonora 55

The teams met in the semifinals a year ago and it wasn't close. Dominguez blew away Sonora, 73-44, on its way to a second consecutive CIF Division II state title. And just as importantly, Tyson Chandler (7'-0" Fr. C) dispelled rumors that he's planning to transfer to Mater Dei next season, explaining after the game: "That's all that is, talk. I'm where I am, right here, in (Dominguez) Red and Gold." Willie Hurst scored only two points for the Dons but he handed off seven assists.

Last night, Sonora stayed with Compton Dominguez, the top-ranked team in the state, and actually took the lead . . . not for long though. 3 1/2 minutes into the game Dominguez exploded to a 13-point lead, then breezed to an 80-55 victory. The two-time defending Division II state champion Dons never led by fewer than eight points in the first half - and moved out to a 37-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

After Sonora's Jeffrey Berokoff banked in a three-pointer on the Raiders' first possession, the Dons answered with 14 consecutive points before cruising to an 80-55 victory in a Southern Section Division II-A boys' basketball quarterfinal at Compton College Friday. It could have been an even bigger blowout, but Dominguez only played the starters about 2 1/2 quarters. The Dons advance to the semifinals and will play Goleta Dos Pueblos. Berokoff, who has signed with San Diego State, scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter. He made five of 10 three-pointers. Berokoff left the game with 3 minutes 37 seconds remaining in the second quarter after he sustained a cut behind his left ear when Prince collided with him after driving for a layup. Berokoff returned three minutes into the third quarter

Six-foot-nine senior Tayshaun Prince, who will play at Kentucky next season, scored 19 points for Dominguez (23-4), which shot 64% (33 of 52) from the field. Prince made five of seven field goals, including two 3-point baskets, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.Point guard Willie Hurst had six assists in about eight minutes of playing time in the first half as Dominguez built a 48-27 lead at halftime. And 7'-0" freshman center Tyson Chandler clogged the middle, blocking five shots. The tallest starter for Sonora, which ended its season at 24-5, was 6'-4" forward Marqui Worthy, who scored eight points, 7 1/2 below his average. Sonora struggled, making only 29% (12 of 42) from the field through three quarters. , but he couldn't stop the Dons' 12-2 run to close out the quarter. Prince's flying tomahawk jam followed by Chandler's two-handed dunk to finish a fast break highlighted the run, which extended the Dominguez lead to 67-32. A dozen Dons got into the scoring column, with Walter Small adding 11 points, Keith Kincade 9, and Mike Carson and 7-foot freshman Tyson Chandler 8 apiece. The win was Dominguez' 23rd in 27 games. Sonora, which has won six
consecutive Freeway League championships, finished its season 22-5.

Region II--Redondo 84, Pacifica 63

Redondo jumped out to a 28 point lead by the half, but then allowed Pacifica to cut the lead to only nine in the fourth quarter. But that was a close as it got. Second-seeded Redondo, which improved to 27-2 overall, will play Muir, which defeated Cathedral City in overtime 83-80, in Tuesday's semifinal. The Pacifica Mariners fell behind by 30 points at one point in the first half, but then went on an 8-2 run to geging the fourth quarter trailing only 9, 63-54. Adam Rachlin, who scored all 19 of his points in the second half, then hit two free throws with 5:03 to go. Redondo never lost it's cool though, and managed to hold off the Mariners. Redondo's Tyler Hoffman, a senior guard, scored 17 of his 24 points in the first two quarters, shooting 5 for 8 in the first quarter, and hitting one of his three three-pointers with eight seconds left in the first quarter to give the Sea Hawks the lead at 23-13 to close out the first period. Junior guard Marcus Moore was also important in the first half, scoring 11 of his 17 points. Pat Douglass gave Pacifica its forst basket of the second quarter with 3:50 left to play. But Redondo managed to pull away 45-15 behind Brian Morris and his three with only 2:16 to play in the half. In the third, the Mariners came out shooting on a 14-6 run during the first three minutes, shooting 6 for 8. Redondo's leading scorer, Andrew Zahn (6'-9 So. C) scored 14 points, a bit below his 20 point average. Junior guard Titus Hun cam off the bench and scored 12 points.

Region III--Muir 83, Cathedral City 80 (OT)

We want to thank our friend "ACuTie4u21" who sent us this report on the game; we're not exactly sure which newspaper this report is from, but it's clearly from somewhere, given it's "newsy" style. And frankly, we're not sure we care or want to know which paper it's from anyway. Here's the game report, edited only slightly:

Caleb and Co. go down in OT
Mustangs 83, Lions 80:
After 20 straight wins, Cathedral City and
Caleb Gervin's season ends.

In the time it took for a second to blink off the shot clock, or a free throw to bounce off the rim, the Cathedral City boys' basketball team's season ended Friday night in an 83-80 overtime loss to Pasasena Muir in the playoff quaterfinls. Muir, an unseeded team ranked 10th in Division IIA at the end of the regular season, robbed the Lions of the chance to win back-to-back CIF Southern Section titles.

The Lions standout senior point guard, Caleb Gervin, finished his high school career as the fourth-leading scorer in Southern Section history after pouring in a game-high 41 points. For the first time in a very long time, the Lions bowed their heads in defeat. The Cathedral City boys basketball team, last year's CIF Division IIIAA champioins, lost the hardest-fought game of their season Friday - and 83-80 overtime decision to Pasadena Muir in the Division IIA quaterfinals. Cathedral City senior guard Caleb Gervin close out his high school, scoring a game-high 41 points, ending his career with 2,648. Muir kept the third-seeded Lions (24-5) at bay, 40-37, at halftime, then 53-49 heading into the fourth quarter. But, Gervin went on a six-point run early in the fourth quarter to tie the game, 55-55, and Nathan Davenport connected on a turnaround jumper in the lane for a two-point lead with 5:54 to play. The score was tied three more times in the next four minutes before Gervin scored two quick shots with less than a minute on the clock for a 69-65 lead. He then sank both free throws on a one-and-one opportunity with 15.4 seconds left. The game looked like a win, even when Kh'Mori House nalied a three-pointer with 10.4 seconds left to pull within three of the Lions. But with only 7.7 seconds left in the game, Gervin missed the front end of a one-an-one. Muir came down with the rebound, and kicked out a long pass to Nate Johnson, who sank the three-point shot to tie the game, 71-71, as the last second ticked off the clock. The four-minute overtime was the Lions' undoing. Gervin scored two field goals, but was matvhed both times with shots from Muir's Bakhoum and Johnson. Marquise Strange stole the ball and scored on a fast break for a 77-75 Cathedral City lead, but Bakhoum sank a three-pointer with 2:28 left to play, then added a field goal and a free throw for an 81-77 lead.
Gervin sank a three-pointer of his own with 33.1 seconds left to play to pull within one, but Davenport's fifth foul send Johnson to the free throw line, where he sank both free throws with 13.1 seconds left. Strange grabed the ball and tried to let a shot fly to send the game into a second overtime, but Johnson snagged it as it left his hands. Muir (23-6) will play Redondo Union in the semifinals Tuesday.

Region IV--Dos Pueblos 75, Burbank Burroughs 65

As usual, here's what our friend Shantay Legans had to say of his own game last night:

We started off with a 6 -0 run and then it was close until the beginning of the 3rd quarter when we went up by 8 or 10 and then they'd get close and then we'd go back to 9 or 10. I made a buzzer beater at the end of the 3rd and a couple more at the end of the shot clock. The game was very physical and they had a good shooter #32 Jeremy Partee I think has white hair. But it got real ugly in the 4th - Burbank decided to regulate with 6 minutes left after I had made a jumper one of their guys busted me in the eye with a cheap shot elbow and I went down and had to go out of the game until the 3 1/2 minute mark and then Jeremy Partee just broke Hoefer nose - blood everywhere! I was pissed after they tried to take my eye out and wasn't about to lose this one. Alex Jenkins had 20 points - game high. I had 18 points, 9 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds. I heard Dominguez won so we play them Tuesday - will find out where tomorrow.

RAISE THE ROOF!!!!!!

Legans

And here's the more conventional report:

Alex Jenkins, Dan Hoefer and ShanTay Legans combined for 57 points to lead Dos Pueblos. Jenkins, who had 20 points, sank a three-point basket with 1:27 remaining in the second quarter, giving Dos Pueblos (24-4), the Channel League champion, a 36-33 lead that they never relinquished. All three players also had to check out of the game with injuries in the second half - the most dramatic suffered by Legans early in the fourth quarter when he made a short jumper in the lane and crashed to the floor holding his head. He writhed on the floor for several minutes before leaving for the locker room to get medical attention.Legans had 18 points and eight assists, and Hoefer had 19 points, including nine in the third quarter. Burroughs (19-10) was paced by Jeremy Cartee, who had 18 points, and Kevin Krose, who had 17. Burroughs built a 19-17 first-period lead on the strength of Krose's 11-point quarter, which included three three-point baskets in as many attempts. Cartee had 16 points, four rebounds and three assists in the first half, helping the Indians stay within 40-37 at halftime. Glen Adriatico had 13 points and Preston Tucker added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Jenkins made sure that battle was won by Dos Pueblos. He hit 9-of-11 free throws in the second half, finishing with a game-high 20 points. He also had 10 rebounds.

Ryan Holbrook had 10 points and six rebounds and put in a solid defensive effort in the second half on Burroughs' leading scorer, Jeremy Cartee. Cartee (19 points) and Kevin Krose (18 points) combined for six 3-pointers and 32 points in the first half but only five total points in the last two quarters. The lead changed hands or was tied eight times in the first half. The Chargers took the lead for good at 36-33 on a 3-pointer by Jenkins and made it 40-37 at half on two free throws by Holbrook and a layup by Kapena O'Neal. A three-point play by Jenkins and layup by Holbrook on a pass from Legans, followed by two free throws by Holbrook and a Legans-to-Hoefer hookup underneath the basket, put Dos Pueblos in control 49-39. Burroughs finishes the season 19-10. Dos Pueblos improves to 24-4.
