USA Today Super 25: Week Two
Rankings Nationally--(December 29, 1997)

If you check the USA Today online site, you'll find the "Week Two" Super 25 rankings. The rankings are undated, and our guess is that they came out last week before Dominguez lost to Baton Rouge's Parkview Baptist and then lost again in the first round of the Slam Dunk to the Beach, and before Westchester was beaten in Vegas. We are also astounded that Rice, which apparently lost not only in Vegas in a game we witnessed, but also in the Slam Dunk to the Beach and which will meet Dominguez in a consolation game, is still ranked, whereas Mt. Zion is not listed. Hey Mr. Krider, have you seen Mt. Zion play? There's no way they don't deserve to at least be in the top 25.

Nevertheless, here are the rankings as they appear over on USA Today's site:

1997 Week 2 High School Boy's Basketball rankings

1. St. John's at Prospect Hall, Frederick, Md. (6-0)

Last week: 1. Update: Won first three games in Iolani Classic at Honolulu as Jason Capel averaged 21 points. Played Provo (Utah) on Monday for title. Next: Dec. 29 vs. Hillside (Durham) in Glaxo-Welcome Holiday Invitational at North Carolina State.

2. Whitney Young, Chicago (4-0)

Last week: 2. Update: Defeated strong Simeon (Chicago) 68-44 as Quentin Richardson scored 25 points. Cordell Henry had 19 points and eight assists. Next: Saturday vs. Englewood (Chicago) in Board of Education Christmas Tournament at Chicago State.

3. Dominguez, Compton, Calif. (6-0)

Last week: 3. Update: Winning streak at 21 with 83-77 victory vs. Mariner (Cape Coral) in City of Palms Classic at Fort Myers (Fla.). Tayshaun Prince had 29 points and 15 rebounds. Prince had 25 points and 16 rebounds in 101-85 victory vs. Slidell (La.). Played No. 19 Parkview Baptist (Baton Rouge) on Monday in semifinals. Event ends Tuesday.

4. St. Patrick, Elizabeth, N.J. (2-0)

Last week: 4. Update: Defeated Florida schools Canterbury (Fort Myers) 71-45 and Robinson (Tampa) 100-88 in City of Palms Classic at Fort Myers. Al Harrington averaged 22.5 points and 15.5 rebounds. Played No. 22 North Charleston (S.C.) on Monday in semifinals. Event ends Tuesday.

5. St. Edward, Lakewood, Ohio (4-0)

Last week: 5. Update: Sam Clancy averaged 16.5 points and Steve Lepore 15 in victories vs. Benedictine (Cleveland) 48-34 and St. John's (Toledo) 69-49. Next: Saturday vs. No. 8 Rice (Manhattan, N.Y.) in Slam Dunk to the Beach National Invitational at Cape Henlopen (Lewes, Del.).

6. Westchester, Los Angeles (5-0)

Last week: 6. Update: Defeated South Mountain (Phoenix) 92-63 and Las Vegas 71-66 in Reebok Holiday Classic at Durango (Las Vegas). Tony Bland averaged 16.5 points and Eric Knight 15.5. Played Monday vs. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) in third round.

7. DeMatha, Hyattsville, Md. (8-0)

Last week: 7. Update: Keith Bogans averaged 20 points and Joe Forte 15 in victories vs. Loyola (Baltimore) 80-56 and Broadneck (Annapolis) 70-49. Next: Tuesday at Surrattsville (Clinton, Md.).

8. Rice, Manhattan, N.Y. (4-0)

Last week: 8. Update: Defeated Basic (Henderson, Nev.) 95-34 and Long Branch (N.J.) 76-51 in Reebok Holiday Classic at Durango (Las Vegas). Dyree Wilson averaged 20 points and Anthony Glover 18. Played winner of Bishop Gorman vs. No. 6 Westchester (Los Angeles) on Monday evening in fourth round.

9. Lexington (Ky.) Catholic (6-1)

Last week: 11. Update: Defeated Florida teams Edgewater (Orlando) 94-73 and Kathleen (Lakeland) 78-45 in Rotary Great Florida Shootout at Kissimmee Civic Center. David Graves averaged 19.5 points. Played Osceola (Kissimmee) Monday in semifinals.

10. Fenwick, Oak Park (Ill.) (8-0)

Last week: 14. Update: Chris Williams averaged 22 points in victories vs. Chicago teams Leo 59-44 and St. Rita 79-65. Corey Maggette averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds. Next: Friday vs. Dunbar (Chicago) in Proviso West (Hillside) Christmas Tournament.

11. Oak Hill, Mouth of Wilson, Va. (8-1)

Last week: 12. Update: Defeated Princeton (W.Va.) 91-43 as Kevin Lyde scored 23 points. Lloyd Price scored 20 points in 83-37 victory vs. Jefferson (Portland) in Oregon Holiday Invitational at Lewis & Clark College. Souleymane Camara had 14 rebounds and six blocks. Played West Linn (Eugene, Ore.) on Monday in second round.

12. Miami Senior (11-1)

Last week: 9. Update: Won twice in Iolani Classic at Honolulu before being upset by Provo (Utah) 67-66 in semifinals, ending 40-game winning streak. Steve Blake had 19 points and Antonio Lattimer 15. Played Fairfax (Los Angeles) on Monday for third place. Next: Saturday vs. Learning Center (Philadelphia) in Chelsea (Mass.) Shootout.

13. St. Anthony, Jersey City (1-0)

Last week: 13. Result: Opened with 78-26 rout of Frederick Douglass Academy (New York) as winning streak reached 18. Robert Cheeks had 15 points, Amin Norris 13 points and 14 rebounds and Chauncey Bryant 12 assists. Next: Tuesday vs. East Lyme (Conn.).

14. St. Joseph Notre Dame, Alameda, Calif. (9-1)

Last week: 10. Update: Defeated Thurgood Marshall (San Francisco) 89-61 as Blandon Ferguson scored 24 points. Suffered first loss in second round of Iolani Classic at Honolulu 47-46 vs. Provo (Utah). Played Iolani (Honolulu) on Monday. Next: Saturday vs. No. 24 St. Vincent Pallotti (Laurel, Md.) in Slam Dunk to the Beach National Invitational at Cape Henlopen (Lewes, Del.).

15. Detroit Country Day, Beverly Hills, Mich. (2-0)

Last week: 15. Update: Winning streak at 19 with 50-33 victory vs. Linden. David Webber and Mike Manciel each had 17 points, and Manciel also had 14 rebounds. Next: Saturday vs. Mumford (Detroit) in Motor City Roundball Classic at Ferndale.

16. Anderson, Ind. (5-1)

Last week: 16. Update: Defeated Highland (Anderson) 61-50 and previously undefeated state No. 2-ranked North Central (Indianapolis) 67-66 before 7,000. Eric Bush had 22 points and Duane Miller had 17 points and 11 rebounds vs. North Central. Next: Jan. 9 vs. Noblesville.

17. Bishop Loughlin, Brooklyn, N.Y. (4-0)

Last week: 17. Update: Defeated Cardinal Hayes (Bronx) 88-52 and Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, N.J.) 58-56 in overtime. Clifford Strong averaged 21 points. Brian Brown averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 assists. Next: Saturday vs. West Charlotte (Charlotte) in Beach Ball Classic at Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Convention Center.

18. Hampton, Va. (3-0)

Last week: 18. Update: Winning streak at 22 with victories vs. Phoebus (Hampton) 74-58 and Woodside (Newport News) 67-52. Aaron Chambliss averaged 22.5 points. Ronald Curry averaged 19 points, 9.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists. Next: Today at Bethel (Hampton).

19. Parkview Baptist, Baton Rouge (13-0)

Last week: 21. Update: Won three games, including 86-70 victory vs. previously undefeated Roger Bacon (Cincinnati) in
City of Palms Classic at Fort Myers (Fla.). Shon Robinson had 27 points and Jermaine Williams 22 as winning streak reached 32. Played No. 3 Dominguez (Compton) on Monday in semifinals.

20. Vincent, Milwaukee (4-0)

Last week: 20. Update: Winning streak at 14 with 56-40 victory vs. North (Minneapolis) as Jose Winston scored 17 points. Terry Sanders had 11 rebounds. Next: Jan. 2 vs. No. 15 Detroit Country Day (Beverly Hills, Mich.) in Pepsi/Press Tournament at Creston (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

21. Plymouth-Whitemarsh, Plymouth Meeting, Pa. (7-0)

Last week: 23. Update: Bill Guess scored 20 points in 78-52 victory vs. Souderton. Guess scored winning free throw with 1.9 seconds left to beat previously undefeated Hatboro-Horsham (Horsham) 60-58. John Salmons had 28 points, 12 rebounds and blocked a layup at the buzzer. Played Council Rock on Monday. Next: Saturday vs. Troy (Ohio) in Slam Dunk to the Beach National Invitational at Cape Henlopen (Lewes, Del.).

22. North Charleston, S.C. (5-0)

Last week: 22. Update: Won three times as winning streak reached 23. Handed University (San Diego) first loss, 60-57, in second round of City of Palms Classic at Fort Myers (Fla.) as Ben Daniels scored 22 points. Played No. 4 St. Patrick (Elizabeth, N.J.) on Monday in semifinals.

23. Minor, Adamsville, Ala. (10-0)

Last week: 24. Update: Patrick Patton had 14 points and T.J. Cleveland 10 assists in 67-44 victory vs. Vestavia Hills. Next: Saturday vs. West Memphis (Ark.) in King Cotton Classic at Convention Center in Pine Bluff (Ark.).

24. St. Vincent Pallotti, Laurel, Md. (9-1)

Last week: 25. Update: Went 3-0 to win Newport Prep Tournament. Handed Newport Prep (Kensington, Md.) first loss 61-60 in final on Rick Smith's free throw with 0:02 left. Nate Green had 15 points, and Austen Rowland had six steals. Next: Saturday vs. No. 14 St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda, Calif.) in Slam Dunk to the Beach National Invitational at Cape Henlopen (Lewes, Del.).

25. Freedom, Morganton, N.C. (4-1)

Last week: 19. Update: Suffered first loss 82-69 to Roger Bacon (Cincinnati) in City of Palms Classic at Fort Myers (Fla.) during 2-1 week. Dennis Mims had 25 points in 103-70 rout of Canterbury (Fort Myers). Played Dillard (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) on Monday in consolation semifinals.
