Santa Barbara San Marcos Wins
SLO Championship--(December 7,1997)

On Friday at the San Luis Obispo Tip Off Classic, Mater Dei beat a fine San Clemente team 70-59 to advance to the Championship game yesterday against Santa Barbara San Marcos. In the semi-final game, Imran Sufi (5'-10" Jr SG), scored 12 points for the Gary McKnight's Monarchs, and Steve Scoggin (6'-2" So. G), who is quickly becoming one of the stars of this team had 22 points and 12 assists. Scoggin was the player who sparked Mater Dei in it's win over Crespi in the John R. Wooden High School Inaugural last Thursday at the Pond. For San Clemente, Semaj Johnson scored 33 points in the losing effort. With the win on Friday, Mater Dei's record improved to 2-0.

Unfortunately for the Monarchs though, they ran into a team from Santa Barbara San Marcos which played them very hard and strong. Mater Dei was defeated in the Championship game by SBSM by a three-point shot at the buzzer from Art Guttierez. Santa Barbara San Marcos won 48-46, and improved their record to 3-0 on the season.

Gutierrez, a senior who played on the JV team last year, led the Royals in scoring with 14 points. Sonny Oden, named the tournament MVP, scored 13 points and added five rebounds. He also had the assist on Gutierrez' winning shot, penetrating the lane before kicking the ball outside. Brook Billings added five points, five rebounds and six blocked shots, giving him 14 blocks in the last two games. The Royals, 3-0, led most of the game, said Hantgin, but Mater Dei took a 44-43 lead on a three-point play with about a minute to play. Oden got inside and powered in a layup to put the Royals ahead but Mater Dei answered with a basket to set up the finish.

Mater Dei, winner of six straight CIF-Southern Section Division 1-A championships, drops to 2-1.
