Santa Paula Tourney: Some
Early Results--(December 29, 1997)

This is one of those "regionally oriented" tournaments, featuring some small schools, some of whom play together in league play, who want a chance to get in some pre-season action, but who don't do any real holiday travel. There's still some great hoops action to be had, and if you're in the Santa Paula area (located just east of the City of Ventura between Moorpark and Camarillo to the south and Piru and Ojai to the north) you're in for some good action.

In first round action on Friday, Oak Park beat Rio Mesa, 68-58. Greg Jones scored 11 of his 28 points in the second quarter and Zack Smith added 14 points for Oak Park, which improved to 4-4 with the win. In other first round action, Oxnard beat Kilpatrick 70-35. Damian Tafoya scored nine of his 11 points in the first quarter and the Yellowjackets (5-3) outscored the Mustangs, 20-1, in the last six minutes of the period. Rick Hernandez led Oxnard with 16 points, and Jacob Rogers had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Keoki Williams had 13 points for Kilpatrick, which dropped to 2-5. For those unaware, Kilpatrick is a "freelance" CIF school. We have no idea what Division they are in, but would guess that it's Division V.

In other first round games on Friday, Hueneme beat Santiago 68-57. Robert Collins had a game-high 22 points for Hueneme in the opening round of the Santa Paula tournament. Matt Ramirez had 14 points for Hueneme, which improved to 4-3.

We're still trying to get other scores, and are not sure of the scheduling, but it looks like this one will go at least through Monday, and possibly into Tuesday as well. We'll put up the results of the other games as they come in.
