Jason Day: The 1997 Iolani Prep Classic--(December 10,1997)

Our friend and correspondent Jason Day tells us that he's trying to work out the logistics which will allow him to be in both Las Vegas next week for the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic from the 19th through 23rd of December and the Iolani Prep Classic in Honolulu Hawaii. We don't know how he's going to do it, but he's going to have fun trying.

In the meantime, he's given us all something to drool about with this latest report on this great winter tournament. Here's his report:

Exclusive to SoCalHoops by Jason Day:

Warm South Sea breezes and top quality competition await four California Roundball teams at the 1997 Iolani Prep Classic at Honolulu, Hawaii, December 17-22. L.A. Fairfax High, Playa Del Rey St. Bernard’s, and Anaheim Canyon will represent SoCal while Alameda St. Joseph rounds out the California delegation.

The sixteen team tourney has also attracted two powerhouses rated in the top 25 in the nation. Consensus No. 1, St. John’s (Frederick MD), led by 6’8 senior forward Jason Capel, and No. 10 (or 11 depending on who you read) Miami Senior (Miami FL), led by 6’9 senior center Sylbrin Robinson, will also be "in the house". Several Hawaii teams, including host Iolani High, and teams from Provo, Utah, Anchorage, Alaska, and Okinawa round out the field.

Fairfax, and St. Johns are in the upper bracket and, if they win their first two games, would meet in the quarter finals. A great test for Harvey Kitani’s squad.

Canyon is also in that bracket and could play either team.

Fairfax opens against Honolulu Kaiser High on Thursday the 18th at 8:pm. (NOTE: Hawaii is two hours behind us.) Canyon opens against Iolani on the 18th at 3:30; St. Bernard’s draws Honolulu Kamehameha at 5:00; and St. Joseph takes on Anchorage Lathrop at 6:30.

St. Bernard’s, St. Joseph’s (yes the one with Ray "all everything" Young), and Miami Senior could bump heads in the lower bracket.

Here are the opening round match ups:

Wednesday, December 17th:

Game 1 – 3:30 Moanalua (Honolulu, HI) vs. Okinawa Select (Okinawa, Japan)

Game 2 – 5:00 St. Louis (Honolulu, HI) vs. Provo (Provo, UT)

Game 3 – 6:30 Leilehua (Wahiawa, HI) vs. Miami Senior (Miami, FL)

Game 4 – 8:00 Mililani (Mililani, HI) vs. St. John’s (Frederick, MD)

Thursday, December 18th:

Game 5 – 3:30 Iolani (Honolulu, HI) vs. Canyon (Anaheim, CA)

Game 6 – 5:00 Kamehameha (Honolulu, HI) vs. St. Bernard’s (Playa Del Rey, CA)

Game 7 – 6:30 Lathrop (Anchorage, AK) vs. St. Joseph’s (Alameda, CA)

Game 8 – 8:00 Kaiser (Honolulu, HI) vs Fairfax (Los Angeles, CA)

Through the miracles of modern technology (satellites, laser beams, cups and string) we hope to have results, stats, and highlights for you each day. Many thanks to Tournament Director Glen Young, of Iolani High School, for the great information and support.

Just to show you how crazy we are about high school hoops, or maybe just how crazy we are period, we will also be keeping you up on the goings on in Vegas for the Reebok Tournament which overlaps the Iolani Dec. 19 – 23. Can’t wait.

Aloha/Peace--Jason Day
