Chaminade Hammers Camarillo,
Advance to Simi Tonight--(December 6,1997)

By winning last night against Camarillo, 71-57, Chaminade has given us all the game tonight we've been waiting for, the matchup of the big men, Berumen, Boys, Fullove, Michel, et. al. vs. Borchart, Long, Beach, Stewart, Todd, et.al.

Chaminade struggled a bit, but the result really was never in doubt as Jeff Young's squad defeated Camarillo in the semifinals. Borchart and Stewart each scored 20 points and Justin Beach hit for 17. Scott Long, who will attend the Naval Academy next year, didn't play, because he had blisters on his feet, and Young didn't want to aggravate them, hoping that they're better for tonight's game with Simi. Borchart had nine rebournds, and Steart and Beach each had five.

With a little more than 3 minutes left to play, and only up by 5, at 56-51 and with Camarillo coming on, Borchart connected on a turnaround j in the lane to make it 58-51. On the next possession, Stewart stole the ball and scored, and then got the rebound again on a missed shot by Camarillo and drove the length of the court for the layup. borchart ten scored again and Chaminade led 64-51 with only 2 minutes to play. That pretty much did it for Camarillo, and the teams traded a few more baskets at the end of the game. Coach Jeff Young told reporters after the game "That surge was the game. We knew our guys would come up with something."

Simi will face Chaminade tonight in the Championship game at 7:30 at Simi High.

Simi also advanced, beating Newbury Park 72-54. Raphael Berumen scored 24 points and Branduinn Fullove had 20 in the win. The game was close, 31-30 at the half with Simi ahead by one, but Simi outscored the Panthers 41-24 in the second half. Brett Michel also had 10 points in the win.

Newbury Park, now 2-1 on the season, will face Camarillo, also 2-1 in the third place game at 5:30 today.
