Arroyo Tournament: Monrovia
Beats Arroyo
--(December 14,1997)

In the third place game in the 40th Annual Arroyo Invitational Tournament, Monrovia defeated host Arroyo 65-64. Monrovia jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, and at the end of the quarter the score was 12-7. The second quarter was more productive for both teams, and Monrovia only outscored Arroyo by one point, 20-19, and at the half Monrovia led by 6, 32-26. In the third quarter, Monrovia improved it's lead by a point, outscoring Arroyo 17-16. Arroyo came back a bit, and actually "won" the fourth quarter scoring, 20-17, but they were still short by a point at the end of the game. Shawn Frederick (6'-3" 188 lb Sr. F/C) led Monrovia with 17 points. Gary Sechi 3, Chad Camine 8, Micke Canizales with 10, Josh Clark with 15, Mike Boykins with 6, Steve ford 2, and Jason Camine with 4.

Arroy's leading scorers were Kenny Smith and Jose Moreno with 16 and 17 respectively. Others were Carlos Vasquez with 10 points, Shek Lan with 9, Oscar Lopez 2 points, Fermin Reza with 2, and Jehovah Martinez with 6.

Monrovia improved it's record to 5-1 with the win.

In other games, Los Altos defeated West Covina by a score of 59-51 to take fifth place beingd the scoring of Jarod Layva with 13 points.

In the seventh place game, Arcadia beat Salesian 64-53.

In the eleventh place game, Gabrielino beat Alta Loma 61-50.

In the Consolation bracket, the Championship was won by Keppel over San Gabriel High, 44-43.

Bell Gardens took 13th place by defeating Workman 52-39, and in the 15th place game, Santa Fe avoided coming in dead last in the tourney by beating Bravo (an LAUSD Magnet League School, which did finish last) by a score of 79-62.

So what happened to the 9th place game? That was the "Consolation Championship" in case you hadn't guessed.

We want to congratulate all the teams participating in this tournament, and especially the Tournament Champs, Mid City, and the Runner-Up, Bell-Jeff.

We'll look for you next year at the 41st Annual Arroyo Invitational Tournament.
