Southern Pacific Shootout at Los Angeles
Southwest College This Weekend--(Sept. 15, 1998)

The adidas/Double Pump Fall Discovery Shootout isn't the only NCAA certified event occurring this weekend in SoCal. In fact, there's another: The 1998 Southern Pacific Shootout, put on by Top Prospects and Dart Stamps, which will be held at Los Angeles Southwest College, in (where else) Los Angeles, California. The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, and will feature "16 plus teams". We don't know about all of the teams, and Dart didn't send us the rosters, but he did tell us when we spoke with him, "You'll probably be able to figure it out when you see the names of the teams coming."

And he's right, given the proximity in time of this event to last weekend's 1998 dada Fall Hoops Classic. You'll see many of the same faces, playing for the same teams again, including

ARC-Los Angeles- This is Robert Ichart's team, and it will probably feature many of the same guys as before, including Derek Andrews (6'-2" Jr. G) from Rancho Cucamonga High, Todd Tomlinson (6'-1" Jr. G) from Moorpark High, Charles Gillig (6'-5" Sr. F) from Harvard-Westlake, Eric Rohwer (6'-9" Sr. F/C) from Burbank High (more about him later), DeVarion Mackey (6'-5" Jr. F) from Marshall High in Pasadena, Sean Corkery (6'-0" Sr. PG/SG) from Moorpark High (a major talent), Anthony Cosby (6'-3" Jr. G) from LA Kennedy, Chris La Count (6'-5" Jr. F) from Gladstone High in Covina, Jason Sanford (6'-6" Jr. F) from Marshall High, and possibly (although we doubt it) two guys who were listed on their roster last time, but didn't show: Kam Walton (6'-8" Jr. F/C) from USDHS, and Michael Malloy (6'-3" Sr. SG) also from USDHS.

ABC Hoops--Mike Lewis' team, and we don't have the roster, but we will get it.

North, and Brennan's brother Brandon Martin (6'-4" Jr. G/F) who didn't play last week due to an injury. Our friend Jason Day talked a bit with coach Carlisle, and we will shortly post up his comments and observations on the team and their game against the Hood, along with our comments about their performance in the preceding game where they beat Casey Jacobsen and TPI I.

IEBP Ballers & Players- Keith Howard's team, this one consists of David Joiner (6'-6" Jr. F) from Rialto High, Baron Baker (5'-10" Sr. PG) from Fontana, Brandon Hulst (6'-5" Sr. F) from Hughson High, Joseth Dawson (6'-2" Sr. G) from Fontana who was nominated to the All-Tournament team at the dada; Gary Holmes (6'-6" Sr. F) from Fontana High, Trenell Eddings (5'-8" Sr. PG) from Eisenhower in Colton, Marquis Revels (6'-3" Jr. G) from Fontanat, Scott Anderson (6'-4" Sr. G/F) from Fontana, Garreth Reed (6'-8" Jr. F/C) from Montclair High School in Montclair, and Daniel Ware (6'-5" So. Shooting Stars -Paul Hoover's squad features Evan Friedl (6'-4" Sr. F) from Servite, Ryan Moreau (6'-0" Sr. G) from Fountain Valley, Robert Abreu (6'-4" So. Slam-N-Jam--Craig Calloway, Sr.--They didn't play last weekend, so we don't have a clue.

Southern California All-Stars--Pat Barrett's squad usually features most of The Hood Players, so it will be interesting to see what happens if they get into the finals against each other. Maybe an intra-squad game? Actually, we hear that this will be the really "young" guys, including Trayvon Williams, Travonte Nelson, Rayshawn "RayRay" Reed, Jason Goodman, Harrison Schaen and Wesley Washington.

Team And 1--Richard Prospero--This was sort of the "junior" Southern California All-Star team, and featured John Tilton (6'-0" Jr. G) from Woodbridge High, Cameron Jackson (6'-0" Sr. G) from Tustin, Matt Jameson (6'-0" Sr. G) from Newport Harbor, Louie Helton (5'-11" So. G) from St. John Bosco, Eddie Draughn (6'-4" So. G/F) from Mayfair, Josh Childress (6'-4" So. F) from Mayfair, Patrick Lefler (6'-2" So. G) from Esperanza, Jamal Walls (6'-7" Fr. F) from Tustin High, Josh Burgess (6'-6" Sr. F) from Woodbridge, Jamaal Sampson (6'-10" So. C) from Mater Dei, and DeAngelo Collins (6'-9" Fr. C) from Tustin. The roster also had Mike Strawberry (6'-3" Fr. G) from Mater Dei, but he was a no show, and when we asked Richard why, he said "Talk to coach Barrett." Er, um, ok. Actually we forgot to ask him on Sunday.

Team Reebok/Compton--Etop Udo Ema--The usual suspects from Compton High, in fact the entire Compton High team, including Dony Legans (6'-1" Sr. G), Ellis Myles (6'-7" Jr. F/C), Lanere Anderson (6'-0" Sr. G), James Cummings (5'-9" Sr. PG), Tito Maddox (6'-4" Sr. PG), Leroy Dawson (6'-1" Sr. G), Jamal Barnes (6'-3" So. G), Jeremiah Thompson (6'-5" Jr. F), Terry Hosendove (6'-5" Sr. SG/F), and Demetrius Clark (6'-1" Jr. G).

The Hood--Russell Otis's entire Compton Dominguez Team, the 1998 dada Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic Champions. In case you forgot who they are, here's the link.

Top Prospects I --Dart Stamps' "first team" and it's really impressive: Casey Jacobsen (6'-6" Sr. SG) who verballed to Stanford last week, Joe Shipp (6'-5" Sr. PF) who should be verballing somewhere soon, Chris Osborne (6'-9" Sr. C) from LA Westchester, James Wright (5'-11" Sr. PG) from LA Manual Arts, Armand Thomas (6'-8" Sr. F) from Crenshaw, Johnny Hardwick (6'-10" Sr. C) from Manual Arts, Jason Morrissette (6'-4" Jr. F) from Fairfax, Brandon Heath (6'-4" Fr. F) from Westchester, Jason McKinney (5'-10" Fr. PG) from Westchester--one of the best point guards on the West Coast--, Keith Everage (6'-4" Fr. F) from Westchester, and Felipe Williams (6'-3" Jr. G) from Westchester. It's also possible/probable that some of these guys will be driving across town from Southwest LA College over to Cal State Dominguez for the Pump thingee too.

Top Prospects II--Thad McGrew coaches Dart's "second" team, and this one features E.J. Harris (6'-2" Jr. PG) from Crenshaw, Tommy Johnson (6'-4" Jr. G) who transferred from Fairfax to Crenshaw, Lou Wright (6'-6" Jr. F) from Westchester, Chad Bell (6'-11" So. C) from Westchester, Phillip Johnson (6'-11" So. C) from Arroyo Grande, Isaiah Fox (6'-9" So PF/C) from Crossroads, Ryan Sims (6'-8" Sr. F) from Crenshaw, DeWayne Parker (6'-3" Sr. G) from Crenshaw, Teddy Fletcher (5'-9" So. PG) from Inglewood, Steve McMaryion (6'-4" Jr. G) from Palisades, and Johnathon Stokes (6'-1" Sr. G) from Crenshaw.
