dada’ Fall Hoops Classic Championship

Dominguez Beats Compton

by Jason Day

Okay, so technically it was "The Hood" over "Team Reebok". The Hood consists of the whole Dominguez Varsity squad, and Team Reebok is the Compton counterpart. The crosstown rivals went at each other with vigor and treated all of us in attendance to a pretty good basketball game.

Dominguez boasts and extremely talented lineup anchored by big man, Tyson Chandler and led by Sophomore point guard, Keilon Fortune. Throw in 6’6 PF, Keith Brooks, 6’6 SF/PF, Cedric Thompkins, and 6’6 SG/SF newcomer, Larry Johnson, and you’ve got the makings of one helluva ball club. Oh, did I mention 6’4 two guard, Keith Kincaide? All he did in this one was light up Compton for 36 pts., 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block. He had 21 at the half. All this after blowin’ up for 25 against IEBP in the semis.

What about Tyyyssssoooonnnn? He only had 2 points in this one. AND, 5 blocks, 5 boards, 2 assists, and lots of attitude. The battle between he and Compton big man, Ellis Myles (6’7 JR C) was almost comical at times. Pushing, shoving, mama jokes, and two double technical calls, it was a battle royal. Myles was holding his own until he let Chandler get to him. That and some foul trouble held him to 9 pts, 3 boards, and a block.

The two guys who stepped up and tried to carry Compton were Tito Maddox (6’4 SR G), and Terry Hosendove (6’5 SR SG/SF). Maddox, one of the bigger guards playing in SoCal this year, who can dominate a game, but he just didn’t have enough support in this one to pull it off. His jumper wasn’t falling, and The Dons'/Hood's aggressive team defense left few opportunities for him to slash to the hole. He finished with 9pts., 4 boards, and a couple of assists.

Hosendove, on the other hand, had a spectacular game. Big, athletic, strong, with great hops, and a nose for the ball. Not to mention a pretty good shot. I had him with 18 pts., 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assists. His defense and rebounding at key points, kept Compton in this one until late. Warning to Compton opponents, guard Tito, but watch out for Terry.

While Kincaide was showing that no one, that’s NO ONE, on the Compton team could stop him, transfer, Larry Johnson was making a statement of his own. The kid runs the floor, is a spectacular finisher, and plays tough D. As good a rebounder at his position as anybody I saw at this tourney, he was wipin’ glass like the Windex man. He chalked up 10 boards to go with his 12pts, and 3 blocks.

Other noteworthy players for Dominguez were: Cedric Thompkins (6’6 JR C/F) who played behind Chandler and contributed 8 pts. and 3 boards. Cedric, a transfer from Westchester is improving with each game, and will see significant action this season for the Dons. Darius Sanders (6’5 FR F) will also be a force for them this year. Very athletic (and BIG) for a freshman, he had 10 pts. and 4 boards.

Later,

Jason Day
