4 "D" Stars Labor Day Tourney Varsity Division:
SCA, Future Stars, 4"D" & More--(Sept. 3, 1998)

The 4 "D" Stars Labor Day Tournament gets underway tomorrow, and there will be quite a few teams coming to town, with the big names in the Varsity Division being SCA, San Diego Future Stars, Harvard-Westlake, & 4 "D"'s own team.

The Varsity Division action will be really tough. Pat Barrett's SCA will be bringing a team, and we don't know for sure who will be playing, but we expect the usual suspects: Usually the team includes Tyson Chandler (7'-0" So. C), Keilon Fortune (6'-1" So. PG), Keith Brooks (6'-5" Sr. F), Keith Kincaide (6'-6" Sr. SF), Travon Bryant (6'-8" Jr. PF) from Long Beach Jordan, Darius Sanders (6'-4" Fr. G) from Compton, Mike Strawberry (6'-2" Fr. G), and possibly a few others from the supporting/starring cast who played with SCA during the Nike National Championships in late July-early September, such as Josh Childress, and its even possible that Casey Jacobsen (6'-6" Sr. SG), Armand Thomas (6'-8" Sr. F) of Crenshaw and Jamaal Walls (6'-7" So. F) Canyon might show.

Of course, it's just as likely that the SCA team won't have the non-Dominguez guys, in which case it would have Chandler, Brooks, Fortune, Kincaide, and would also will feature the rest of the Dopminguez roster including guys like Keith Jaffus Haley (6'-0" Sr. G), Cedric Thompson (6'-5" Jr. F), Mika McKinney (6'-2" Jr. G), Steve Moore (6'-3" Jr. G), James Jackson (5'-9" Sr. G), and Donald James (5'-8" Sr. G) all of Dominguez. We also heard a rumor that Jason Morrissette (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Fairfax might be playing with SCA, but Reynaldo wasn't certain about that one.

Other teams coming in the Varsity division will be the San Diego Comets, a team we know nothing about, and another team which is pretty much a mystery, from Palos Verdes simply called "PV."

We know that one of the IEBP teams is coming, but we don't know whether it's the "All-Stars" or the "Ballers & Players. According to Reynaldo this is just the "IEBP" team (but Eric Washington thought it might be "the one with the female coach" in which case it would be the "Ballers & Players.)

So we'll give you both rosters, just in case one or the other shows. If it's the IEBP All-Stars, we would expect to see Kristian Jordan (6'-1" Sr. PG) from Etiwanda, Matt Santos (6'-0" Sr. PG) from Upland, Damon Knight (6'-0" Sr. G) from Corona, Jamaar Walker (5'-11" Sr. PG) from La Sierra, Jaqay Carlyle (6'-6" Sr. F) from J.W. North, Brandon Martin (6'-4" Sr. F) from Trabuco Hills, Jason Johnson (6'-8" Jr. F/C) from Upland, Brennan Martin (6'-6" Jr. F) from Trabuco Hills, Derek Mgbeke (6'-2": Sr. G) from J.W. North, Desmond Penegar (6'-7" Sr. F) from Upland, Demarcus Williams (6'-7" Jr. C) from Upland, and Kamron Leonard (6'-8" Sr. C) from J.W. North.

If, on the other hand, it's the "Ballers & Players" look for David Joiner (6'-6" Jr. F) from Rialto, Baron Baker (5'-11" Sr. PG) from Fontana, Joseph Dawson (6'-1" Sr. PG) from Fontana, Gary Holmes (6'-6" Sr. F) from Fontana, Trenell Eddings (5'-9" Sr. PG) from Eisenhower, Marquis Royles (6'-4" Jr. SG) from Rialto, Jamal Williams (6'-6" Fr. F) from Corona Centennial, maybe even Demond Huff (6'-10" Sr. F/C) who may in fact have already enrolled at Cuesta College and thus would not be eligible, Garreth Reed (6'-8" Jr. F/C) from Montclair (not the one in Van Nuys, but the one in Montclair, CA), Scott Anderson (6'-5" Jr. F) from Fontana, and Damiel Ware (6'-5" So. F) from Dorsey High.

And it's equally likely that whether it's the Ballers & Players or just the "All-Stars" you'll see some combination of the above two teams for this tournament. Can't be sure until they show.

Reynaldo also told us that Harvard-Westlake will be entering a team, and if it's the "usual" H-W team, it will likely feature Russell Lakey (6'-0" Jr. PG), Dan Kinzer (6'-8" Sr. F/C), Eric Geffner (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF), and a bunch of the other guys who played this summer in the War on the Floor tourney and in the Palm Springs tournament. Unfortunately Anthony Naylor (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) is still injured and will not play. . . guess his arm didn't want to go back into the socket after he dislocated his shoulder back in July at the Pump Best of Summer tournament. And H-W will also be without Chad Garson (6'-3" Jr. SG) who is in Alaska, and we also don't know whether Alex Holmes (6'-5" Sr. PF), H-W's big center/forward will be in attendance given the proximity of the tournament to the start of football season. But if he's there, you won't want to miss a huge 250lb guy bombing in three-pointers from all over the court like he did in the War on the Floor. Amazing.

The 4 "D" Stars team coached by Bill Brooks will likely feature Marvin Issacs (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Inglewood High, Jermel Brooks (5'-8" Jr. PG) from North High in Torrance, Dialo Washington (5'-10" Sr. G) from Crenshaw, John Moseley (6'-2" Sr. G) from Crenshaw and Marquis Worthy (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Sonora, Charlie Kundrat (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) from Peninsula, Brandon McMillan (5'-11" Sr. G) from North Torrance, and possibly Jordan Brown (6'-5" Sr. F) and Abraham Cruz (5'-9" Jr. PG) from St. Paul. Of course, 4 "D" will not have some of the Harvard-Westlake guys who usually play for them, as Eric Geffner, Dan Kinzer will be playing for H-W. It's also possible that Ramsey Kadana (6'-2" Sr. SG) from Morningside will show for 4 "D".

Finally, the San Diego Future Stars will also be playing in the Varsity Division. Coached by Fentriss Winn of the Bishop's School in San Diego, they will feature Nick Booker (6'-5" Jr. SG) from La Jolla Bishop's, Chris Prins (6'-4" Jr. SG) of Escondido Calvin Christian, DJ Hicks (6'-0" Jr. G) from Oceanside El Camino, Wayne Bernard (6'-2" Sr. G) from San Diego Horizon, Nick Trainer (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) from Fallbrook High, Tim Jackson (6'-2" Sr. SG) from San Diego Pt. Loma High, Tim Brown (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) from El Cajon Christian, and a player we haven't seen before, Steve Houle from Carlsbad High. According to Fentriss Winn, it's also possible that Mike Hausman (La Jolla, Bishop's) if Water Polo permits.

There will be action in the Varsity division starting Friday night and all day Saturday, mostly at Leuzinger, but a few games will be at Gardena High. The semi's will be at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday at Leuzinger, with the Championship on Sunday. Don't miss it.
