Detroit JCC Maccabi
Update No.1: Welcome To Motown--(Aug. 16, 1998)

We're here in Detroit and will be posting updates for the Continental Maccabi Games throughout the week in addition to the other usual stuff. Some notes about what we know so far:

Harrison Schaen has apparently grown at least an inch since the beginning of the summer and he's now 6'-7", wears a size 17 shoe, and believe it or not, he just turned 13.

Harrison Schaen makes a new friend on the airplane to Detroit.

The L.A. and Orange guys look well rested after a weekend at Camp Tamarack up in the woods on a beautiful lake about an hour north of Detroit. Chad Garson (6'-4" Jr. G) who had been out for a week with back spasms will be playing, and the frontline of Adam Drell, Josh Lewis, Darren Tarlow, Adam Allegro and Eric Geffner will be very tough. From the younger Orange County guys, David Gale, Craig Weinstein and Will Sheslow will make up the starting backcourt and these guys looked really good in practice on Saturday.

We will have updates and profiles of the San Francisco team, the teams from Philly, Atlantic City, Harrisburg, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, Suffolk, Bronx/Riverdale, and others throughout the week.

The opening ceremonies begin tonight at the Palace at Auburn Hills, and competition starts tomorrow at 9 different basketball venues. Obviously this is going to be a difficult task to cover it all, but we'll do our best.
