Saturday Open Scores; Some Big Upsets--(July 19, 1998)

Most of the favorites won in the Open Division: QBL, Rockfish, DC Assault, Capital Players, EBO. They all won. We've now got some (most) of the scores from Saturday's games now. The 10:40 games are still coming in, but most of the others are now over. Here's a brief recap of what happened today:

In Bracket #1, ABC Hoops lost to KC Acts 50-65, while Capital Players beat Gym Rats, 78-71, which set up the later game between KC Acts and Capital Players. Not surprisingly, Capital Players won by a score of 64-48.

EBO Fresno continues to march on, beating Colorado Superflow Gold 101-71 in the first game in the morning, and then getting by on a squeaker 93-91 by beating a solid Toledo All-Stars team. Toledo in turn had advanced to the EBO game by beating the Greater Boston Team 82-79.

EBO Frenos will now meet Capital Players tomorrow in game 505, which is set for tomorrow morning (Sunday) at 9:00 a.m. in Durango's Main Gym. Don't miss this one.

Houston Select beat LA Rockfish Dolphins 76-56 in the morning game, which set up Houston to play Madison Broncos, which had advanced by beating Franklin Covey Express in a shocker by a score of 77-64. In a 5:20 p.m. evening game at Cimmaron-Memorial's Main gym, Madison proved that they were by far the better team, beating Houston easily 74-59.

Houston will now meet Valentino's Bison Nebraska, which itself advanced by beating Connecticut Select 77-66, and then hammering Santa Margarita this evening at Cimmaron-Memorial's auxiliary gym in a 5:20 game by the score of 69-44. Santa Margarita had looked very strong by beating the Las Vegas Heat in the morning contest 51-75.

The Houston-Valentino's game (No. 506) is set for 9:00 a.m. in the Durango Auxiliary Gym.

In Bracket #2 of the Open Division, Washington Altoids won both of its games to advance and will now meet the New Orleans Jazz in game No. 507, which is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the Cimmaron Main Gym.

In the first game this morning, Washting beat Memphis Sounds 85-64, which set up their game against Bob Gottlieb's BWBA I squad, with little Lance Buoncristiani (5'-8" Sr. PG) from Reno Galena High. BWBA had won it's first game in the morning fairly easily, defeating the Dakota Schoolers 81-64, but BWBA was just no match for the Altoids, losing 82-59.

New Orleans advanced by beating the Fort Worth Lions III 90-52 in the morning game, and then in the 5:20 p.m. game tonight, they beat Cambryland Foundation II, just getting by 84-80 in a tight game. Cambryland had beaten Fastbreak Black 89-59 in the morning game.

In the other half of the #2 bracket, the Michigan Mustangs will meet the Long Island Panthers at 9:00 a.m. in the Cimmaron Auxiliary gym.

Michigan advanced by beating Stay in the Game 71-54 in the morning game, and then beating NOVA United handily by a score of 46-81. NOVA had looked pretty good, winning it's morning game 64-56 over Minnesota Select Gold, but couldn't hang on against Michigan.

Long Island advanced by beating the Indy Metros Gold 57-43, and then defeating the Squires Richmond in a very close game. 60-57. Squires had advanced to the evening game by winning the morning game agaisnt Texas 2000 by a score of 71-61.

In Bracket # 3, all the favorites advanced, as QBL Lakewood, DC Assault, Pump & Run III (which is really Pump & Run II--read our earlier article on the P&R rosters--it's Dave Goosen's squad with Bo Segeberg, et. al), and the Iowa Indians all won.

QBL beat a very good Fort Worth Lions I team in the morning game 75-63, and then met Huntington Park (the one from Pennsylvania, not L.A.), and also had a tough time, winning by one of their lowest margins yet, 49-41. Huntington Park had advanced to play QBL by beating Mountian View 74-67. QBL advanced by winning both games and will now meet DC Assault in Game No. 515, which is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. in the Durango main gym.

DC Assault beat Sash/Storm Team Ohio in another high scoring game, 100-73, and then met the Brooklyn Beasts, who had advanced by beating HAAY Select 72-67 in OT. DC Assault beat Brooklyn 82-66.

Again, the QBL-DC Assault game is one you won't want to miss. It's at 10:20 a.m. in the Durango Main.

Iowa and Pump & Run III will face off at 10:20 as well, but in the Durango Auxiliary Gym, so if you stand in the doorway, you can see both games. But if you want to really watch the action, you'll have to make a choice.

Iowa Indians advanced by beating the Oakland Hot Shots in the morning game 84-63, and then getting by Stormin's Classic II 69-63. Stormin's had advanced that far by beating the New York Ravens in the morning game, 66-61. Pump & Run III beat Boise Valley Select 75-57, and then got by Texas Blue Chip (which itself had beaten Inland Sports I 91-83 in an overtime game), by the score of 72-67.

In Bracket # 4 the Emerald City Pioneers will meet Friends of Hoop I at 10:20 in the Cimmaron Main Gym on Sunday morning, while Team Indiana will face off with Above the Rim in the Cimmaron Auxiliary Gym also at 10:20 a.m..

Emerald advanced by beating Columbus BBall Club I 88-77, and then getting by Atlanta All Stars 77-73. Atlanta had earlier beaten Montana Hoops I 70-63.

Friends of Hoops I advanced by beating Las Vegas' local surprise favorite Green Valley by a score of 67-48, and then getting by Colorado Fleet Feet easily, 62-38. colorado had earlier defeated Memphis M/T Idlewild 80-66, and it looked like they had just run out of gas by the time they met up with FOH.

In the other half of the #4 bracket, Team Indiana beat the Granite State Raiders by only 1 point, 61-60, and then got by Central Valley Fresno I 80-66. Central Valley beat the Chicago Knights 67-60 in the morning game.

Above the Rim beat SSA Sacramento I 71-53, then got by Las Vegas Select 81-59. Team Quebec lost in the morning game to LV Select 84-79.

In Bracket 5, one of the brackets with byes in the second round, Team Philly, Team Utah, Team Carolina Sonics I, and the LA Rockfish all advanced, with Philly and Rockfish getting the easiest route, getting byes and playing only once today. They should be well rested, because some of the other teams advancing played two very hard games today.

Philly got by Florida Flash I 83-67, and then drew the bye. Rockfish handled Minnesota Select White 69-58 and then drew their own bye.

In the rest of the bracket, Utah beat Cereal City Hoopsters 83-57, and then beat the Arizona Heat 73-58. Arizona in turn had earlier beaten the Tulsa Hawks in another squeaker, 87-86, but it took too much out of them when they got to Utah.

Carolina beat Mason Dixon 93-80, and then faced off against St. Lawrence, which had advanced by beating Salpointe 71-67. Carolina beat St. Lawrence 77-65, setting up the matchup with Rockfish tomorrow morning at 11:40 a.m. in the Durango Auxiliary gym.

In Bracket No. 6 of the Open Division, Abbey AC will meet Atlanta Celtics I tomorrow in game 535 at 1:00 p.m. in the Durango Main Gym. DTA Team Wisconsin will meet No Excuses in game 536 scheduled for 1:00 p.m. also at Durango, but in the Auxiliary Gym.

Abbey beat Friends of Hoops IV in the first game today 89-69, and then drew a bye to advance. The Atlanta Celtics I beat So. Oregon Stars II in their first game today 107 - 68, and then dispatched the Pittsburgh Jots 72-67. The Jots had earlier beaten the Minnesota Elite Black Jrs. in the first game 104-60.

In the other half of the bracket, DTA beat Stop Six Team I 76-45, then beat Oakland Slam-N-Jam by a score of 80-64. Oakland had looked pretty good in the first game, beating Salt Lake Metro Srs. 83-48, but they just didn't have enough to bet by DTA. No Excuses earned the right to face off with DTA by beating Team Texas 17's in their first game today 88-84, and then drew a bye to advance.

In Bracket No. 7, Pump & Run I (the team coached by Rob Alexander, and featuring Gilbert Arenas) advanced and will play Omaha Godfather's Pizza tomorrow (Sunday) in game No. 545 scheduled for 2:20 p.m. in the Durango Main Gym.

Pump & Run beat the Utah Royals 78-66 in their first game of the day, and then drew Friends of Hoops II for the second round, beating them 74-72 to advance. Omaha in turn advanced by beating Elite BBall Academy 95-64, and Florida Flash II 83-79.

In the other half of the bracket, Martin Brothers Select will meet Tim Thomas Playerz in Game No. 546 scheduled for 2:20 p.m. in the Durango Auxiliary Gym. Martin Brothers advanced by beating Wisconsin Select 72-63, having earned a bye for the morning game by reason of its point differential during pool play. Wisconsin had earlier beaten Northwest All Stars 80-54.

Tim Thomas had also drawn a bye for the first game, and thus was pretty well rested when they met Tri County Cobras, beating them 91-85. Tri County had earlier played Cambryland Foundation I, and beaten them in a close game, 91-88.

Finally, as we write this, Virginia Select American was playing the New Mexico Lobos for the right to play in game 555, which is scheduled for 3:40 p.m. Sunday at Durango's Main Gym. The winner of that game will meet the winner of the Bay Area Ballers I vs. Illinois Fire game, which was also not yet concluded as we were writing this.

New Mexico had beaten South Dakota Stars earlier to advance, 68-57, and Virginia Select had drawn a bye in the first round of games. Similarly, Illinois Fire had drawn the bye, while BAB had beaten Diaper Dans of VA 64-47.

Finally, in the other half of the bracket were two other games yet to be determined: Cleveland BBall v. Rotary Boys Club, and Houston Super Stars v. IEBP All Stars. The winners of those two games will meet tomorrow (Sunday) at 3:40 p.m. in the Durango Auxiliary Gym.

Rotary had advance Saturday by beating Oregon Nike 93-90, while Cleveland had drawn a bye. Houston had beaten CBC Denver 56-45, and IEBP had also drawn a bye.

We'll update the brackets shortly, so you can get a visual picture of what's happened, and we'll also have the results for the "A" and "B" Divisions shortly.
