Riverside Press-Enterprise Reports
Miggins To Sign At SJSU--(July 29, 1998)

The Press-Enterprise reported today that Riverside County basketball Player of the Year Jimmy Miggins said Monday that he has "signed with San Jose State."

Miggins (6'-7" Sr. SG/SF), who played center at Riverside Arlington last year, will attend San Jose State as a Prop. 48 student, because he didn't meet the academic requirements to play Division I ball in the upcoming season. Miggins said he'll spend a year in the weight room trying to put on 10-15 pounds of muscle, and pump up his academic brawn to pass 24 college units and gain eligibility.

Miggins told the P-E that he chose San Jose State over Fresno State or going to a junior college largely because of Coach Paul Johnson, a former assistant under Lute Olsen at Arizona. "I took a visit and liked the coaching staff and what they had to offer," Miggins said, "and everybody on the team was pretty cool, too. But mostly, it is Division I basketball."

Miggins also told the P-E that Johnson is committed to the run-and-gun style of play of Arizona, and that suits Miggins. San Jose State probably will use Miggins, 6-foot-7, as a swingman forward, Arlington coach John Seydel told the P-E, and he expects Miggins to show his versatility. "Players like Jimmy -- you just don't confine them to one position. You just put him on the floor and let them play," Seydel said. Miggins averaged 27.8 points, 16.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game last season at Arlington.
