adidas Big Time Vegas Tournament
EBOTeam Roster--(July 15, 1998)

We talked to Darren (Mats) Matsubara yesterday at the final session of West Coast All Stars, and in addition to giving us some insight into why he sat his star player out of the last two days of camp, he also talked about his team, how he coaches and his philosophy of basketball, sports and motivation. The latter is a bit broad for now, and we'll do an article on that when we have more time. For now though, here's what the EBO Team will look like this week in Vegas at the Big Time tournament:

Coach: Darren "Mats" Matsubara

Carlos Boozer (6'-9" Sr. C) from Juneau Alaska's Douglas High
Deshawn Stevenson (6'-5" Sr. PF) from Fresno Washington Union
Brett Nelson (6'-3" Sr. G) from West Virginia,
Napoleon Rhodes (6'-7" Sr. C) fropm Vanguard High in Ocala, Florida
Shamel Stallworth (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Fresno Washington Union
Willie Johnson (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Fresno Edison
Dustin Schultz (6'-9" Sr. PF) from Fresno Exeter
Chris Lopez (6'-7" Jr. C) from Fresno Clovis West
Cedric Barrow (5'-10" Jr. PG) from Sacramento Jesuit
Marcel Cummings (6'-3" Sr. PG) from Sacramento Laguna Creek High
Jason Bow (6'-4" Sr. G) from Fresno Clovis West.

Earlier in the year Coupe Taylor (6'-0" Sr. PG) from Fresno Washington Union was listed on some of their rosters and he played with the team, but it doesn't look like he'll be going to Vegas, at least Mats didn't mention him as being on the roster.

This is probably one of the most powerful teams in the tournament, and combining Boozer, Stevenson, Rhodes and Lopez, with the shooting of Nelson, Johnson and Bow and this is a truly great team, capable of beating up on almost anyone. We first got a look at Rhodes at West Coast All Stars after he flew in from ABCD camp, and even though he was a little tired, he's a very impressive guy. Boozer is one of the top recruits this season, and he's the first priority for UCLA right now. Stevenson is one of the best fast-break, slam dunk artists, and Stallworth is a great shooter. Look for this team to at least be in the final four, if not to win the whole thing outright.
