Mater Dei, Los Al, Glendora To Play In
Wooden Classic December 4--(June 5, 1998)

Like last year's Wooden Invitational, Mater Dei, Los Alamitos and Glendora will play. Apparently, Crespi will not be back, and rather than a four game exhibition which started last year at 5:00 p.m. and which stretched well past midnight (with the DeMatha team from the east coast playing it's game at about 2:00 a.m. EST), this year's version of the Wooden Invitational High School Classic will feature a slightly slimmed down event with only six teams. And since the last game is at 9:00 p.m., we may actually get home this time before midnight.

The Wooden Classic High School Invitational Tripleheader will be held on Friday December 4, 1998 at the Arrowhead Pond. Los Alamitos will tipoff the event at 6 p.m. against Vista Rancho Buena Vista, which has won two San Diego Section Division I titles in the past four years.

In the second game, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Compton Dominguez, the Southern Section Division II-A champion (Tyson Chandler, Keilon Fortune, Keith Kincaide, and who ever else returns and/or comes in next year) will play Texas 4-A state champion Houston Waltrip. We don't have any information on them yet, but we'll be digging around to see what we can find.

In the third game, Mater Dei (Mike Bayer (6'-6" Jr. F), Steve Scoggin (6'-2" So. G), Eric Soderberg (6'-7" Fr. F/C), Christian McGuigan (6'-2" So. G), Ryan Stacey (6'-6" So. G), Derek Mansell (6'-2" Jr. G), Imran Sufi (5'-10" Jr SG) , Steven Hilferty (6'-2" Jr SG/SF), Cedric Boseman (6'-3" Fr SG), Sal Munoz (6'-3" Jr PF), and Steve Henderson (6'-4" So SG))--not to mention whoever else will join the team this next year, will face defending Southern Section Division I-A champion Glendora (Michael Ahmad (6'-8" Jr C), Chad Clark (6'-6" Jr SF), Chris Clark (6'-6" Jr PF), Bruce Hatch (6'-2" So SG), Casey Jacobsen (6'-6" Jr SG), Graham Miller (6'-3" So SF)--and whoever else comes in for them).

The Mater Dei v. Glendora game should be the highlight and will tip off at 9:00 p.m. What is it about Glendora?? In the four or so "exhibition" games they played last year, as a team, all of their games were at 9:00 p.m. or later. Oh, well.

Of course, the high school game is really separate and apart from the Wooden Classic college doubleheader, which will be held the next day, Saturday December 5, 1998, also at the Pond. In that one, Pepperdine will play Kansas and UCLA will meet Oklahoma State. Tickets need to be purchased separate for the high school games and for the college games. But be sure to get tickets to both. You won't want to miss them.

See you there.
