Shelton Diggs and Chris Stevens
Sign At Western Washington U--(May 5, 1998)

We earlier reported on April 3 that Division I Boise State was going to be getting official visits from Shelton Diggs (6'-2" Sr. G) and Chris Stevens (6'-9" Sr. F/C), both of Long Beach Poly. We also had heard that they both might sign there, and even after that, we saw Shelton at the Rockfish spring league and he told us he was still leaning toward Boise.

My how things change in a month.

Shelton and Chris have both signed, but not at D-I Boise. Instead they have signed at Western Washington University. DubDubU moves from the NAIA to NCAA Division II next season. The Vikings return four starters from a team that reached the championship game of the Pacific Northwest Athletic Conference playoffs. Shelton and Stevens should be immediate starters and impact players on this team.

Western Washington University Vikings head coach Brad Jackson has confirmed that the school has received signed National Letters of Intent. Both players were considered mid D-I prospects.

According to Western Washington's official press release:

Diggs, a 6-foot-2 guard, earned all-league honors last season, helping the Jackrabbits to a 26-6 record, the league title and the finals of the California Interscholastic Federation southern sectional. He averaged 15 points, five assists and two steals per game.

"Shelton (Diggs) is a very good athlete with excellent court sense," said Jackson. "He shoots the ball well and is comfortable playing at the point or off guard."

Stevens, a 6-foot-9, 240-pounder, missed all but four games as he underwent back surgery for a ruptured disk. As a junior, he averaged 10 points and five rebounds on a 29-3 team that won league and sectional titles and reached the first round of the Division I state tournament.

"We had him checked out because of the back injury, and he's in great shape," Jackson said. "He's very physical, really boards well, and plays tough defense."
