CIF State Playoffs: Southern Region
Division IV Semifinal Details & Results--(March 13, 1998)

Nothing. Nada. No details. Unbelievable. Doesn't anyone have anything on these two games? Even that eternal Verb fan, Michael Miller is drawing a blank on this one. And what's up with the Fresno Bee. They had an article on the Corcoran girls' game, but nothing on the boys' game. Turnabout is fair play? That'll teach us not to cover the girls. Anyway, you already know the scores:

Verbum Dei 79, Lincoln Academy 56

The Bishop School 48, Corcoran 43

****Flash*** Division IV & More

Update 11:30 p.m. 3/13/98:

Yeah! Pat McKinney comes through again. We were sitting here playing with the idea of previews for the Regional finals when we got an e-mail from Pat. Here's the most relevant stuff from that letter:

I apologize for taking so long in getting back to you. I toyed with the idea of writing up the games for the other divisions, but decided against it. The Union-Tribune offered a few little blurbs on Verbum/Lincoln and Bishop's/Corcoran. Not much, though, and I'll give it to you verbatim:

The Bishop School 48, Corcoran 43

"For the first time in the program's history, the Bishop's School's boys basketball team is going to the Southern California Regional championship game. The second-seeded Knights advanced by downing third-seeded Corcoran 48-43 in overtime last night in the Division IV playoffs at St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey. Bishop's (25-7) saw a 12-point third-quarter lead evaporate but came back to outscore the Panthers (27-6), Central Section Champions, 7-2 in the four-minute overtime. The Knights will play Los Angeles Verbum Dei at 4 pm tomorrow at the Long Beach Pyramid. Sophomore Nick Booker led all scorers with 18 points. He also had 11 rebounds. Junior Mike Hausmann added 13 points and 16 rebounds. (Kevin J. Farmer)

Here are the lines:

Corcoran 4 13 14 10 2 43
Bishop's 13 11 8 9 7 48

Corcoran: Roark 4, Rios 3, Whitfield 11, Roux 6. (The rest was garbled)
Bishop's: Trainer 3, Yates 9, Leshaw 2, Garcia 3, Booker 18, Hausmann 13.

Bishop's was a weird story to me because Coach Fentriss Winn coaches both the boys and girls and both advanced to the semis. The boy's team actually relinquished its home court advantage to play where the girls played.

Here is the Lincoln/Verbum story from the U-T:

Verbum Dei 79, Lincoln Academy 56

L.A. Verbum Dei (21-5) went on a 21-8 second-quarter run en route to a 79-56 win over visiting Lincoln (20-7) in other Division IV action. "That (second quarter) really broke our backs," said Lincoln coach Charlie Paulk. Verbum Dei's Marlon Parmer (sp?) led all scorers with 29 points while Lincoln's Anthony Watts finished with a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds.

Lincoln 13 8 16 19 56
LA Verbum Dei 16 21 23 19 79

Lincoln: Anderson 4, Manning 2, Coleman 2, Cooksey 4, Edwards 2, Allen 10, Wilson 2, Rufus 2, McGuire 3, Watts 18, Tuisamoa 5.
LA Verbum Dei: Watkins 4, Johnson 15, Cobbs 2, Parmer 29, Dashiell 14, Davenport 6, Beck 1, Diggs 2, Suazo 6.

In Division V, Horizon rocked Santa Clara 80-47. A 55-29 second half finished off Lou Cvijanovich's club and denied him his 800th career victory this season. Zack Jones led with 15 as 12 players scored for Horizon. Horizon is on a rocket to the state title in Division V. Coach Cvijanovich was so upset with the officiating that he removed his team without exchanging handshakes (do you think it really mattered?).

And here's some other commentary Pat had to offer on the Chaminade game (I've edited out the purely private stuff which should clearly not be put up on the web):

On Chaminade: I have a lot of respect for Chaminade's players and know that Borchart is going to be unreal in the next couple of years. He reminded me of Chris Burgess his freshman year at Mater Dei, except Borchart is better. They will surely be back.

Oh, and is it true what I am hearing about Chris Jeffries being injured and out for Saturday? It would be a shame. . . . It is shades of when the Dons missed their shots two years ago against Harvard-Westlake after Nate Walton injured an ankle in the semi with Morningside. He returned for the final and gave it his best but Uni succumbed in overtime at the Pond. We'll see what happens, but I guess this is exactly why they play the games...
