Pat McKinney: San Diego Quarter
And Semifinals--(March 7, 1998)

We've been a bit remiss in covering the San Diego Hoop scene this last week, what with everything that's been going on in the Southern Section and LA City Section playoffs, including the finals this weekend. If you're interested in the news from the southernmost regions of SoCal though, you should be following Pat McKinney's USDHS Don's Basketball website, where you'll get not only the news of the Dons and their playoff run, but also the rest of the news in San Diego from the other divisions. Paul Smith's Helix High site also covers the Helix team, and provides some great information. Visit them both if you get the chance. Here's Pat's article on the quarterfinals and the schedule for the semi's all of which were played this last week in San Diego. We'll follow this with Pat's report on the Semi results and then the finals.

A couple of boys' games were played last night to determine the last of the semifinalists. The first was in Division II, matching #2 seed Oceanside with El Cajon Valley and County scoring leader Kemmy Burgess. El Cajon went out to a 42-36 halftime lead and got up by as much as 15, but Oceanside refused to go away. Oceanside tied it up and El Cajon would get the last shot. Phillip Mitchell (11 points) got one off with 3 seconds to go, but it was blocked by Bobby Spicer. Burgess picked up the rebound and fired up a baseline jumper that went after time expired. Burgess finished with 30 and teammate Hoshang Sabir 22, but it was not enough as Oceanside won 76-74. Matt Adame led Oside with 19.

The second game matched Division V top seed Horizon with Escondido Adventist. Forget about it. Horizon took a 32-15 first quarter lead and won 95-48. Detrick Watts scored 22, Zack Jones 16, and Blake Jensen 12 to lead Horizon into the semifinals.

The semifinals get going Tuesday night and here are the times and places:
