Washington Union Loses Third Game;
Oak Hill Loses Too--(Dec. 10, 1999)

Our friends up in Fresno alerted us to this story which appeared in the Fresno Bee this morning about yesterday's much-anticipated showdown between two of the best players in the country, DeShawn Stevenson (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Fresno Washington Union, who has signed with Kansas and was rated as a top 5 player in the country after his performances at ABCD Camp and in Vegas, on the one hand, and Eddie Griffin (6'-9" Sr. F/C) from Philadelphia's Roman Catholic HS, who was ranked as the No. 1 player this summer by those attending the shoe camps and the Vegas Big Time Tournament, who signed with Tommy Amaker's Seton Hall.  The KMOX Shootout in St. Louis, Mo., is a one-day event, featuring some of the top teams in the country playing one game each.  That's it. . . and that's why it's called a shootout:  One and out or one and done.  And this time, it's Washington Union which is taking lumps early.   But so what?  There are still very few teams, possibly none,  in the State of California within their division (D-III) of the CIF who can beat them, and by the time the playoffs roll around, we're willing to bet that they'll have the kinks worked out.  Anyway, here are the details of the story from the Fresno Bee (which doesn't archive the stories, so we will excerpt their piece here):

Behind 31 points from 6-foot 8-inch Seton Hall-bound forward Eddie Griffin, Philadelphia Roman Catholic routed Washington 90-51 Thursday in the Coca-Cola/KMOX Shootout in St. Louis, Mo., handing the Panthers their third straight loss.   "We couldn't matchup with them sizewise," Washington coach Larry Triguiero said, adding that Roman Catholic's front line is 6-9, 6-8, 6-6. "They're the biggest team we've ever seen. Their smallest guy was 6-3."  Washington star DeShawn Stevenson scored 19 against a box-and-one defense but had an off day offensively,   Triguiero said. Stevenson had 10 rebounds and freshman Maurice Shaw had nine rebounds.

Chicago Westinghouse beat Oak Hill Academy of Mouth of Wilson, Va., 58-57 in the Coca-Cola/KMOX Shootout, ending the top-ranked high school team's 35-game winning streak.
