San Diego Nike National Prep Classic:
Saturday's Complete Schedule--(Dec. 25, 1998)

Due to our presence in Las Vegas for the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic, we're running later than we expected. Here is the Tournament Schedule for the 1998 Nike National Prep Classic .  There have been a couple of changes since we announced the list of teams a few weeks ago.  In particular, the organizers have seen two of the big teams in the "National" bracket drop out. Crenshaw was scheduled to play Horizon in the first round of this Division, but Horizon of San Diego has mysteriously and unexpectedly decided not to participate in the tournament, and so has St. Augustine of Louisiana.  We asked the media relations guys about the reasons for the change, especially because we were looking forward to seeing Horizon (which beat Crenshaw in the Ocean View Tournament of Champions two weeks ago) take on Crenshaw again, but they couldn't provide any real reason, at least not one we could print.

Remember, this tournament is taking place simultaneously at five different locations, so if you thought it was tough to see everything in Las Vegas, you'd better get ready to drive really, really fast (just kidding, of course we want you all to obey every speed law :-) ). And unfortunately, at least for Saturday, most of the "National" bracket games overlap in scheduling, so you'll have to choose which games to see.

Saturday's games are not all "bracketed" games. Those shown as "local"  or "non-bracketed" or "girls" are games which won't count in the tournament standings. They are literally just an excuse to get everyone out to see some games, including some of the local San Diego area teams go at it who normally wouldn't be scheduled against each other.   As a result, most of the bracketed tournament games won't really start until Monday, December 28.

The big matchups tomorrow will include Rancho Buena Vista (Aaron Abrams, Jason Bow) v. Bishop's (Mike Hausmann, Nick Booker) at 5:30 p.m. at Cox Arena;  USDHS (Kam Walton, Mike Malloy) v. Simi Valley (Rafael Berumen, Branduinn Fullove, Brett and Shaun Michel); Glendora (Casey Jacobsen, Chris Clark) v. Sacramento Jesuit;  Capistrano Valley (Nate Hair, JJ Sola, Mike Stowell) v. Bishop O'Dowd (Tony Champion); Crenshaw v. El Camino; Robeson (William Butler, Andre Blackett) v. Crossroads (Isaiah Fox, Felipe Williams, Chad Gordon); Christian Brothers (??) v. Manual Arts (Johnny Hardwick, James Wright, Curtis Millage, Brandon Moorer); South Tahoe (??) v. Ocean View (Tony Dow, Torin Beeler), and Villa Park v. St. Anthony's of NY.

Unfortunately we won't be able to make it personally to San Diego, because we've already committed to being at the first day of the Best in the West, but we'll have some help from our local friends in San Diego who will let us know what's going on.  The tournament organizers won't be keeping stats like they do in Las Vegas using a DynaSport, so we won't be able to provide the kind of stats that we'd like, but at least our friend Brian Dennish, who is the media relations guru running interference in this thing has agreed to keep us posted with such stats as are kept.
