San Diego: Results From Below The
Southern Section From Last Week--(Dec. 15, 1998)

Like the other results we posted from Southern Section tournaments, there was quite a bit of action down in the San Diego area.  Before these results get too stale, we thought we'd put them up.  And just as with the Southern Section stuff, we were plain overwhelmed on Sunday and too busy to compile all of the tournament results separately.  So rather than put these up one at a time, each with it's own article heading, we're posting them here as one piece. The results are to the following tournaments

Eagle Vacquero Classic,   Foothillers/Sultana Tournament, The San Diego Small Schools Invitational, the High Five Trojan Classic, and the San Diego Hilltoppers Tournament.

There's not a lot of analysis with these, but they will certainly mean something to a lot of people with just the results and the scoring by quarters.  Hopefully we'll be able to get more detailed stuff out of the San Diego area from the Union-Tribune now that football season is over, and because the U-T has also started posting prep results.  We can only hope.

San Diego Hilltop Tournament Results-- (Dec. 13, 1998)

Championship Game

Rancho Buena Vista 72, Helix 43-- Rancho Buena Vista, playing without Division I prospect Aaron Abrams (6'-4" Sr. SG) just hammered Helix in the Championship game of the San Diego Hilltop Classic Tournament on Saturday.  And it looks like without star point guard Ron Johnson, Helix could use some help.  Johnson, who signed with Long Beach State, and who played for Helix the last couple of years is now doing his thing for the 49'ers, and his job just got a lot tougher yesterday, as it was reported by coach Wayne Morgan that Johnson will have to carry the load completely at Long Beach State this year, given the resignation from the team by LBSU starterTommy Davis (who also resigned two years ago and didn't play last year)  due to a "family emergency."

Helix was having its own family emergency yesterday as Rancho Buena Vista, led by point guard Louie Corado (5'-9" Sr. PG/SG) did most of the damage, scoring a game-high 30 points.  Rancho Buena Vista's defense managed to hold Helix to just 4 points in the first quarter, while the offense pounded out 23 points in the same quarter.  Helix played within four points of Rancho Buena Vista for the second quarter, losing the quarter score by 18-14, but they trailed badly at the half 41-18, and never really recovered.   In the third quarter, Rancho Buena Vista extended the lead even farther, scoring 18 points but holding Helix to just 8, and at the end of the third, the score was 59-26, and in the fourth quarter, the Longhorns sealed the win, adding another 13 points to Helix's 17, but the difference was too great, and RBV managed to hold on to win by 29 points.

Other scorers besides Corado for Rancho Buena Vista were  Silvio Bohannon (6'-3" Sr. F) who had 5,  Darius Taylor ( 5'-6" Jr. PG) who scored 2, Corado with 30, Chad Difontorum (5'-8" Sr. PG/SG) with 2,  Clovis West transfer Jason Bow (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) who scored 14,  C.J. Fellers (6'-5" Sr. F) who had 16,  and Keith Albright (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) who scored 3 points.  Helix's scorers were Cortez with 7, West 2, Davis 4, Waggoner 12, Parker 4, Smith 3, Horton 6, Aftreth 4, and Florence with 1.
